A MUSICAL story of fun, love and fantasy introduced a new generation of fans to the work of Gilbert and Sullivan at Barrow’s Forum 28 in 1994.

Barrow Savoyards presented Iolanthe, featuring Helen Troughton in the title role, for its 22nd show.

The Mail, on Tuesday, February 22, noted the opening night: “The Savoyards have, as usual, come up with an evening of pure, gorgeous entertainment.”

Sheila Thorne featured as queen of a group of mischievous fairies, including Michelle Larcombe, Helen Oakley and Claire Phipps-Jones.

Russell Palmer played a shambling character called the Earl of Mountararat, with Iain Nicholson as the foppish Earl Tolloller.

John Twyford played the doddering Lord Chancellor.

Bill Sprinthorpe was Private Willis.

Peter Dyer led the orchestra and Anne Woods and Alan Lewis took the romantic roles as Phyllis and Strephon.
