TEN years has passed since the doors closed at one of Barrow's iconic shops.

Betty Wilkinson and Wynn Dawson called time on much-loved sweet shop, The Bon Bon, on Saturday, June 27, in 2008 after 44 years.

The shop had been at Paxton Street for four years but was founded on April 26 in 1964 in Abbey Road.

It was in a parade of shops built in 1936 as part of the Apollo cinema — once the Ritz.

The former Marks and Spencer workers quickly built a reputation for their sweet shop and tobacconists.

In its heyday, the shop opened 9am to 8pm, Monday to Saturday, and 2pm to 8pm on Sundays.

In October 2002, when the shop first faced a demolition threat, Mrs Wilkinson said: "It's one of the few traditional shops left.

"Children have never seen a shop like it."
