FINDING out how engineering structures work saw a group of school pupils, teachers and parents head to Furness College for a day of discovery 24 years ago.
The Mail on November 18, in 1994, noted: "Budding engineers from Barrow's Sacred Heart Primary School turned their hands to building bridges of all shapes and sizes at Furness College.
"The Year Two children were at the college learning about structures.
"They looked at different types of bridges, including suspension, cantilver and arch bridges.
"Then the children went on to look at cranes and studied the difference between solid, framework and surface structures.
"The pupils also got a chance to make experimental models."
Pete Sadler, a lecturer at Furness College, said: "They were good little masterbuilders.
"They enjoyed themselves, the teachers enjoyed themselves and the parents that came with them enjoyed themselves.
"The children will now take their new practical knowledge back to school to put to good use in the classroom."
