Barrow rock group The Relics received a Youth Opportunities grant from Cumbria County Council to fund equipment and facilities for a scheme to encourage youngsters to take up an instrument and form new bands.

Former deputy head girl Joan Kenworthy returned to Barrow Grammar School for Girls to be speaker at the speech day held in Barrow Public Hall. Miss Kenworthy was co-warden of Salisbury Hall at the University of Liverpool.
Villagers at Oxen Park faced tap water which had the smell of rotten fish and contained live worms, North Lonsdale Rural District Council was told.

A detached bungalow with two bedrooms on the new Mountbarrow estate at Ulverston was on sale for £3,495.
