The St James’ Church, Barrow, faced closure and almost inevitable demolition under new proposals from a working party on its future.

A December 7 date was set by the Department of Transport for a public inquiry into the A590 High Newton bypass. It would be held at the Grange Hotel, Grange.

Improvements to more than 70 Dalton council houses were scheduled to be carried out as part of a £1.8m programme lasting three years.

A presentation was made to Barrow railway workers James Jutton and Reg Thomas for recovering a valuable tidal door which had been washed down the River Winster.

Repair work to the Salvation Army Citadel, on Abbey Road, Barrow, had cost £2,250 so far. Services were being held in the Sunday School Hall.

Barrow Shipyard Band won the Rayner Cup in the brass quartet class at Blackpool Musical Festival.

A presentation was made to Arthur Storey on his retirement as director and general manager of the Vickers Engineering Works at Barrow.

There was a £50 jackpot on offer at a bingo night at Barrow’s Salthouse Pavilion. It cost 30p to play.
