Battle of Britain parade: 75th anniversary of RAF in Barrow

The event will also mark the 75th anniversary of RAF Barrow, celebrating the area's ongoing contribution to the air service industry.

Simon Evans, a member of RAF Barrow, said: "It's important for us to remember what has come before us.

"But, at the same time, the parade is an opportunity for us to also remember what is still taking place."

A remembrance service will take place following the parade's arrival at the cenotaph, with a marching band performing.

Mr Evans argued that events such as this and the role they play have only grown in importance in a belief that the younger generation is not learning about these stories as much as they once did.

"I was actually chatting to a young colleague the other week and they didn't even know about the Battle of Britain," he said.

"They're not being taught about these things nearly as much in school, which means that we really hope that they visit and participate in the parade coming up."The parade is a chance for the town's history to be celebrated too (Image: Martini)

The Battle of Britain was a military campaign during the Second World War in which the RAF and FAA defended the UK from large scale Luftwaffe attacks between July and October 1940.

As well as focusing on the bravery and sacrifices of the pilots involved, the parade will be a chance to remind the public of how involved Barrow and the county were throughout the war.

Mr Evans finished by saying: "Most of all, as an event, it brings people together in the community, uniting them in these stories.

"And, from that, they can learn more about efforts still ongoing to this day."
