A ROYAL British Legion branch is offering a safe haven to those struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder.

The Ulverston branch of the Royal British Legion is reminding the public of the services it offers to those struggling with PTSD.

The reminder comes after Westmorland and Furness Council signed the Armed Forces Covenant - a promise by the nation ensuring that those who serve or who have served in the armed forces, and their families, are treated fairly.

Council leader Jonathan Brook, together with Major Jennifer Henry of the Army HQ Northwest, signed the covenant in June following a unanimous vote by members to support it.

Alex Moran, president of the Royal British Legion Ulverston, hopes this will help in drawing attention to those who have served and are serving in our armed and public forces.

Mr Moran is also raising awareness of the Ulverston branch of the RBL and the services it offers.

He said: “The Ulverston branch of Royal British Legion has 165 members many of whom have served their country and some are in need of help. PTSD is now a recognised health issue but even up until the Falklands conflict this diagnosis was unknown.

“People suffering from this need a safe haven in a comfortable non-threatening environment. The British Legion Club on Brogden Street can offer this.

“These people need the company of like-minded people who can empathise with their problems. The British Legion Club on Brogden Street can offer this.

“Furthermore, veterans in need of help be it financial problems, mental health issues or are struggling with loneliness need access to counselling. The British Legion Club on Brogden Street can offer this.

“We host drop-in sessions every third Tuesday in the legion club where those in need of help can access the services of trained councillors who have knowledge and understanding of their concerns.

“Apart from these services the British Legion Club in Brogden Street also offers rooms for hire for functions, fundraisers, meetings, coffee mornings and parties, revenue from which help fund the services we offer.”
