FOLK multi-instrumentalist Phil Beer and French singer-songwriter Flossie Malavialle provide a fantastic double-header in the Lake District this weekend.

The pair both appear at the Browfoot Room to help celebrate the fifth anniversary of the Ulpha venue's opening.

Malavialle was the very first headliner, while Beer was one of the driving forces in getting the venue open in the first place.

The Music in Ulpha programme was originally prompted after responding to an appeal from Phil Beer's website asking for suitable smaller venues, and he accepted an offer to play at the hall in May 2012.

As a member of the sensational acoustic supergroup Show of Hands, he has performed all over the world leaving, including four concerts at The Royal Albert Hall.

Beer’s musical genius has led to him playing on album tracks for such luminaries as The Rolling Stones, Mike Oldfield and Steve Harley, not to mention hundreds of other established artists.

He is one of the UK’s most popular ambassadors for acoustic roots music. A dazzling instrumentalist, he is renowned as a top flight fiddler and also plays in the all-star line-up, Feast of Fiddles.

He was nominated for the coveted Musician of the Year title at the 2009 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, and picked up Best Song and Best Duo (with Steve Knightley) the following year.

Beer and Malavialle are no strangers - she supported Show of Hands on a tour a few years ago and more recently was also involved in the Show of Hands tour of the Rhine by boat.

The Darlington-based folk guitarist and singer is renowned for her live set that blends traditional and modern songs, together with her unique French/North East sense of humour.

Featuring a few songs of her own, her set also includes numbers by the likes of Kris Kristofferson, Allan Taylor and Frank Sinatra, as well as Edith Piaf favourites No Regrets and La Vie En Rose .

She has released 12 albums to date, mostly of covers of songs that have inspired her. A productive 2015 has seen her put out two records, with the most recent being If I Have To Go , with perhaps the most diverse tracklisting to date, seeing Flossie take on songs from Paul McCartney, Tom Waits and Abba.

This special night of live music takes place on Saturday February 4. The show starts at 8.15pm, and tickets are available on the door or in advance from Ulpha Post Office and Broughton Information Centre.
