A HUGE summer line-up of shows at the Barrow Underground Music Society sees local favourites rubbing shoulders with high-profile acts from across the Atlantic.

Among the acts to appear at the Sonic Zoo headquarters in Carlisle Street over the coming months will be Jungle Brothers linchpin DJ Sammy B and Detroit electronic soul superstar Amp Fiddler.

The first show on the July programme, however, features exclusively local acts, with the North West Music and Arts Academy Fundraiser on Saturday 8 starring acoustic acts Phil Collier and Jamie Bosanko, and talented young vocalist Imogen Reed. The show will serve as an informal introduction to the new project, which launches this summer.

The first international guest of the summer will be jetting in on Thursday July 20: DJ Sammy B, one third of one of the most respected, influential and iconic hip hop acts to step out of New York, will be heading up the Real Hip Hop Sessions.

The Jungle Brothers mainstay is visiting the UK for a handful of small gigs, cutting up beats, breaks and oldskool hip hop bombs.

Manchester-based Redvenom joins him - the MC dropping tracks from his recent and critically-acclaimed release, Red House - and DJ Gripper, as well as hip hop hostesses LP and Tif, will also be appearing on the night.

The big highlight of August will see Amp Fiddler bring his European tour to Barrow.

As well as touring alongside legendary funk-master George Clinton in acts such as Parliament and Funkadelic for more than a decade, the highly respected singer-songwriter and keyboardist has worked in close quarters with the likes of Prince, Jamiroquai, Basement Jaxx, and Primal Scream.

The tour follows his recent performance at Glastonbury, and sees him joined by fellow Detroit funk icon Roy Ayers and up-and-coming Boston DJ and production duo Soul Clap, while DJ Gripper and the Lake District's Bligeness bring a local flavour to the already impressive line-up.
