THOUSANDS of racegoers and music fans are getting ready for what promises to be a sensational weekend as Tom Jones will play his first concert in the South Lakes in 50 years.

The music legend – whose iconic hits span six decades – will take to the stage at Cartmel Racecourse on Friday.

Tickets for the show are still available via www.ticketmaster.co.uk

He last played South Cumbria back in 1966 when he played Barrow’s 99 Club, before heading off to the USA to make his debut there.

With a career that has seen him sell in excess of 100 million records, Jones was Knighted by Her Majesty The Queen in 2006, and the global star has amassed 36 top 40 UK hits.

Fans at the Cartmel show are assured of a fantastic night as Tom and his band present a stunning set-list built from a career that traverses all eras and genres of popular music.

The show is presented by North West-based music promoters Cuffe and Taylor. Director Peter Taylor said: “The excitement has been building ever since we announced this show and we cannot wait for Friday.

“We have done many shows across the UK with Sir Tom over the last few years and what we can guarantee is that this will be an amazing, unique and unforgettable experience.

“Tom Jones is simply a music icon whose live shows are the stuff of legend. Bringing him to such a picturesque and stunning location as Cartmel is a massive thrill for us and I am sure the thousands of music fans and racegoers will have a sensational night that will live long in the memory.”

Tom Jones will take to the stage following an afternoon of top quality flat racing. Gates open from 11am, and the first race is at 2.20pm. Last race is at 5.20pm.

First on stage following the races will be The Tailormade, an indie pop three-piece who are opening for the likes of Little Mix, Olly Murs and The Beach Boys this summer.

The Tailormade - all former University of Cumbria students - hit the headlines earlier this year after they became the Radio 1 Breakfast Show’s house band as they undertook a series of musical challenges with the likes of James Arthur and The Vamps.

They will be followed by Into The Ark, the sensational duo Sir Tom coached all the way to the final of ITV’s The Voice.

Hailing from Blackwood in South Wales, Into the Ark are made up of 21-year-old Taylor Jones and 25-year-old Dane Lloyd. The soulful pair won over the public and judges with a stunning set of performances.

Cartmel Racecourse is in tip-top shape going into the weekend with another full day’s racing on Sunday.

Jonathan Garratt, racecourse managing director, said: “It’s Not Unusual for racegoers to have a wonderful time at Cartmel Races – and that has never rung truer than it will on Friday!

“The one and only Tom Jones is here and this is going to be a really special day for everyone connected with Cartmel Races. This man is behind some of the most recognisable and memorable songs of the last 50 years and there is going to be a real party atmosphere.

“Please allow plenty of time to arrive on the day. As this is a major music concert there will be extra security measures in place which may mean it takes you a little longer than normal to access to the racecourse.

“I would advise people to get here early, relax and enjoy a show that will be nothing short of sensational.”

The concert starts approximately 45 minutes after racing and will conclude at around 8.30pm It is advised for those travelling by taxi these are booked for 9pm or after.

Those bringing a picnic should be advised no glass is allowed within the concert arena – located in the course enclosure.

Similarly, the racecourse usually welcomes dogs and they will be allowed to come with you on the concert day – but they will not be permitted in the front half of the concert arena, where the crowd will be dense and unsuitable for dogs.
