BROOKLYN urban jazz star Sinkane is the latest high-profile name to announce a Cumbrian library date.

The eclectic performer, who has worked with Blur's Damon Albarn and members of LCD Soundsystem and Hot Chip, will bring his live band to Barrow Library on Tuesday September 5.

Born in London and raised in Sudan and New York, Sinkane - real name Ahmed Gallab - has worked on a diverse array of projects, covering everything from krautrock, prog rock, electronica, free jazz and funk rock, to Sudanese pop.

This February, he released his sixth studio album, Life & Livin’ It, which showcases his ultra-modern afro-funk leanings.

The band's acclaimed Mean Love album saw them spread the gospel of Sinkane to the world, playing 166 shows in 20 countries.

During the same period, Ahmed had also led The Atomic Bomb Band — the highly celebrated 15-piece outfit that played the music of elusive Nigerian electro-funk maestro William Onyeabor.

The band included David Byrne, Damon Albarn, members of Hot Chip, LCD Soundsystem, The Rapture, Jamie Lidell and legendary jazz musicians Pharoah Sanders and Charles Lloyd, and they played all over the planet, including making their TV debut on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.

As Ahmed got into the depths of writing for Life & Livin’ It, he had a clear goal; to conjure the ups and downs of a universal experience, and have fun while doing it.

The album draws from the best elements of Sinkane’s previous records: the slinky funk and soul grooves are there, so are the sparkling melodies with roots in sub-Saharan Africa.

The fun and immediacy of Sinkane’s live show is a central feeling of the recordings. Bassist Ish Montgomery, drummer Jason Trammell, guitarist Jonny Lam and Ahmed all contributed, and are lined up to appear in Barrow on this autumn's tour.

Emma Broadbent, Community Service Officer at Barrow Library said, "We are so excited to have Sinkane coming to Barrow Library. His feel-good music will create a fantastic atmosphere. His new album is full of funk and soul grooves with sparkling melodies, our audience will love it!"

Sinkane appears at Barrow Library on Tuesday September 5 as part of the Get It Loud In Libraries programme. Tickets are available from
