THE new season of live music gets under way at Ulverston Sports Club next week.

South Lakes Music Partnership kicks off its 2017 programme at the Priory Road venue with a visit from Americana solo performer Steve Chapman-Smith, on Friday February 3.

The seasoned singer-songwriter has had a wide and varied musical career to date, playing on many recordings from bands including Fiat Lux, Ghostdance, Riprize, Ada Wilson, Stranger than Fiction, and more recently The Troubadors.

He also recorded four sessions for John Peel at the BBC's Maida Vale studios with his bands.

The Yorkshire-based musician has been a part of the live scene in his home county for more than 40 years, playing with various bands in the Wakefield and Leeds areas before finding success as a founder member of post-punk outfit Red Lorry Yellow Lorry.

Now focusing on his solo career, he will be showcasing his original material with a few much-loved covers from artists such as Steve Earle, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Gram Parsons and The Stones, when he visits Ulverston.

Many of the songs will be familiar to fans of country and Americana music, dating from the 1960s onwards, and featuring Steve's accomplished acoustic guitar and bouzouki playing.

He has two releases of his own to his name too - an EP and an album - the most recent being 2015's effort, Justice, showcasing his intricate guitarwork and varied influences.

Doors at the Sports Club open at 7.45pm, and tickets are available on the night or can be reserved in advance by phoning 07749 827488.
