THE recently-reformed Hadrian's Union head to the south of the county next week for their first appearance at Ulverston Sports Club.

Having returned to action with a heavily-revised line-up last year, the five-piece are ready to re-establish themselves as one of the region's finest folk acts.

They appear at the Priory Road venue on Friday March 3, as part of the South Lakes Music Partnership programme.

Initially starting life as duo, Hadrian’s Union formed in 2010 and were signed to independent Cumbrian label Fellside Records in 2013, which spawned the seeds of such bands as Bellowhead and Folk Award winners Greg Russell and Ciaran Algar.

However, they disbanded later that year, and lead singer and songwriter Stew Simpson decided to pursue a solo venture instead.

In calling upon fellow musicians to help him record an album, a whole new band was formed.

Completing the line-up with guitarist and vocalist Stew, are Robin Jowett on melodeon and keys, Brian Bell on bass, drummer Dave Pratt and violinist Malcolm Bushby.

Since coming together, the band have worked hard to develop a new sound which incorporates all of their musical influences including Lindisfarne, Home Service, Stackridge, Bonzo Dog Dooh Dah Band, Morris On and Fairport Convention.

Last summer they appeared at Cumbrian festival Music on the Marr - where they had played a farewell gig two years earlier. This year has already seen them confirmed on the bill for the upcoming Stepping Stones festival in the north of the county, by which time we should have a new Hadrian's Union studio album.

The band is currently working on the tentatively titled Aural Borderalis, with a view to a general release in summer 2017.

Doors for the Ulverston show open at 7.45pm, and tickets are available on the night, or can be booked in advance by phoning 07749 827488.
