THE regular Poem and a Pint programme moves to Greenodd next weekend, with an appearance from a highly-acclaimed, award-nominated poet.

The guest for the event on Saturday July 1 will be Emily Berry, whose collection Stranger, Baby published earlier this year, has just been shortlisted for the prestigious Forward Prize for Best Collection.

Her second full collection comes four years on from her Dear Boy debut, which was also a prizewinner, whose dominant voice was filled with desire for an absent lover, focuses on "managing the chaos of loss through poetry".

Stranger, Baby sees Berry manage the chaos through a new, more tightly structured, less indulgent verse.

There will be music from South Cumbria’s inimitable a cappella Braddyll Friends, who regularly appear at poetry readings, W.I. parties, wedding parties, and even informal parties on Birkrigg Common and at the launch of submarines.

They have planned a programme including T.S. Eliot, the Liverpool Poets and Humphrey Littleton, with a few other surprises set to be thrown in.

As ever, the regular floor slots for local poets to read their work can be booked on the night, and Caroline Gilfillan will take the role of MC.

Poem and a Pint, which takes place at Greenodd Village Hall, starts at 7.30pm, and entrance is payable on the door.
