FOLLOWERS of Cumbrian pop punk will be salivating at the prospect of seeing the latest newcomers to the local scene.

Wolfpeake count members of short-lived Barrow outfit Greystone Avenue and Millom-based Willowside Park among their ranks, but far from treading the same old ground, the four-piece are promising to bring something new and fresh to the table.

With 20-year-old singer-songwriter Jack Hayes plucked from the Furness acoustic scene to front the band, the pieces are in place ahead of a potential launch later this summer.

Bassist Arron Twinney says: "We've been at it for about three months now, and it's all falling into place nicely.

"We're still a little way off gigging, but the first thing we want to do is have a single and a video ready so that we can show people what we do.

"We've realised from our other bands that it's better to have a product before you get out there, so once that's out we'll start looking at booking some shows."

Arron once again teams up with drummer Callum Gibbons - the pair having shared the stage in bands such as Beyond Betrayal, All Becomes Clear and Greystone Avenue over the years - with Willowside Park guitarist Sam O'Donnell completing the line-up.

"Me and Callum tried to start another project with a couple of other lads, but for whatever reason, it just didn't really work," says Arron.

"We tried to go heavy again, but it wasn't the same anymore.

"I saw Jack play at a couple of acoustic shows and thought 'this guy's got something', so I went to him and asked if he'd be keen to put some electricity behind his own songs.

"We all got together and had a chat - it was like a little Pizza Hut date - and then after our first practice everything just felt right.

"Us two have been in bands together since 2009 in Beyond Betrayal, when Callum was on vocals, so there's a lot of experience, we've gathered a lot of knowledge, and spent a hell of a lot of money.

"Hopefully this is the last time we're sitting here talking about a new band, because for once, personally it feels like we're all on the same page. We know what we want, and what the band should be, and all egos get left outside the band."

The experienced backbone of the band compensates for the relative inexperience of their frontman, Jack, who admits that the task of stepping into this new role is a daunting one, but he is eager to get going.

He says: "I was probably a bit intimidated at first, because obviously they've all been doing this a while, but it's all new to me - there are things that they'll take the lead on, but it's been great that everyone in this band has got a creative input.

"The thing that blew me away was that when we started playing my songs as a band, they were exactly as I'd envisaged them when I wrote them. I couldn't believe how huge they sounded.

"I just can't wait to play a gig now. I'm probably that shy kind of frontman, but I know I'll get used to it pretty quickly.

"When you're playing solo acoustic shows, sometimes you're just background noise, but I've seen it where as soon as a band comes on the crowd just changes completely, from being totally chilled out to going mad."

There will naturally be a lot of attention on Wolfpeake when they finally start releasing music - and even more so when they step out onto the stage for the first time.

Their respective bands and previous projects have all achieved a certain degree of success, playing shows all over the country and amassing large followings online. The work is now under way on building up a similar amount of hype for this new project on social media, while a good chunk of a live set has already been written

They've been recording with Danny Stone at the JB Studios, in Barrow, and the plan is to satiate their new fans first with a single and a video in the next couple of months.

Arron says: "We heard The Sides' EP that they recorded at JB, and it sounded really good, so we decided to record here.

"I was gutted that we never recorded more with Greystone Avenue, but not everyone was committed to it and it just naturally fizzled out.

"We've got a bit of a reputation between us now, so people know about what we're working on and are asking us to play on gigs in Scotland, and we want to sort out a couple of weekenders in places like Manchester and Liverpool.

"Before the first gig, we're looking to maybe do a few acoustic shows to get the name out there."

Callum adds: "We want to get a video together for the song, because that's the way people consume music now. If there's something visual for people, it doesn't just disappear after a week or so.

"The set-list is coming together really quickly - we can turn an idea into a full song in two practices, and there's so many ideas flying about."

Reluctant to describe the new band as pop punk, they are hinting at a more indie-oriented sound, owing to Jack's acoustic songwriting and vocal style.

Catfish and the Bottlemen are one of the big influences, and also the yardstick that upcoming indie rock and alternative rock bands are measured against these days - though some of their previous influences are sure to creep through.

"It's sort of a mix of pop punk that we are all into, with indie vocals that Jack has brought into it," Callum continues.

"I'm more influenced by bands like Lower Than Atlantis, and their drummer, Eddy Thrower, and Sam is from Willowside Park of course, so he was desperate for it to be pop punk.

"But what's different about this band is that we are writing for the song. We're not overplaying anything or making things too technical - it's all about making the vocals really hooky, and doing what comes naturally.

"Barrow is definitely the best place for us to get started, especially while Jack's still a bit green behind the ears, and me and Arron won't have played in nearly a year.

"Once we get that first show booked, that will push us more and spur us on."
