A PLAY based on the real-life story of Chechen refugee and her family struggling to get asylum in the UK is set to appear in South Cumbria.

Journeymen Theatre's new production, The Bundle, tells this moving tale in Kendal,on Saturday March 3, and in Ulverston on Tuesday 6.

The Bundle follows Adilah’s domestic persecution and denial of human rights in Chechnya.

Removed from her Russian homeland by her Chechen father, abducted into a forced marriage and then subjected to a life of servitude to pay off her husband's gambling debts, she takes the ultimate risk in plotting her escape to the UK.

Here she finds a home but also encounters the Home Office’s hostile environment with regard to asylum seekers and refugees.

The play moves from the tradition of the folk story to that of biting satire as it charts Adilah’s bid for freedom, safety and hope.

The title of the play refers to the huge pile of paperwork needed by asylum-seekers.

The production, by Journeymen Theatre, was commissioned by the Quaker Asylum and Refugee Network.

It is being brought to Cumbria by Furness Refugee Support. A spokesman for the group said: "This play gives a true insight into what asylum-seekers have to go through. It really is one not to miss."

There is no charge for performance but donations towards expenses will be welcomed.

The Bundle is being performed at the Unitarian Chapel, Kendal, from 4pm on Saturday 3, and at The Parish Centre, in Church Walk, Ulverston, from 7pm on Tuesday 6.
