A UNIQUE art exhibition is set to open in South Cumbria next month, which is said to be a visual representation of Chinese Whispers.

Links began with a single image, which got passed on to the next artist in line to create their interpretation of the previous piece.

The exhibition opens at Ruskin’s Bar, in Stricklandgate, Kendal, on Friday November 10, and marks the culmination of the year-long project.

Each artist only saw a photograph of the one piece immediately before them in the chain, and no-one has seen more than one piece prior to the night of the hanging.

There was no communication of size or medium or any limit on these factors when the artist was determining how to continue with their ‘link’.

This is the third time artists from the Kendal Arts Community have undertaken the exercise, with 12 members taking part - each having a month to complete their contribution.

Co-ordinator Zoe Baker, also one of the 12 artists, says: "The whole project is a challenge and enormous fun for the artists.

“We hope that viewers are equally intrigued about how each artist has interpreted the piece before theirs in the chain."

The contributors, in order, are Diane Meth-Cohen, Ashley Turton, Jayne Wilkinson, Helen Pateman, Claire Griffel, Zoe Baker, Mike Glover, Angela-Lee Kennedy, Tracey Escolme, Roy Gibson and Iain Greenbank.

Paintings, photographs and paper-cuts are involved. A brief paragraph explaining the process of inspiration accompanies each piece.

“Obviously as no one has seen the artworks, it is difficult to give any details in advance," adds Zoe.

“But I know that this year the exhibition explores subjects from deepest space to a tiny flower. It promises to be quite a show.”

Links will be on display at Ruskin's Bar until January 2018, and artists are already lined up to participate in next year's project.
