THE silent film series at Bowness' Royalty Cinema draws to a close for 2016 with a late-night Halloween special this weekend.

The season finalé on Saturday night will be a rare screening of the 1927 macabre horror movie The Unknown, starring Lon Chaney Snr and Joan Crawford.

In the film, the bizarre hopes and fears of a group of circus performers in a 19th Century freak show are played out by the all-star cast.

Lon Chaney stars as "Alonzo The Armless", who will stop at nothing to possess the beautiful Nanon, played by a very young Joan Crawford. Directed by Tod Browning, the story is vividly brought to life in this cult classic, which is as disturbing now as it was when first released.

As with Browning's later sound film Freaks, contemporary reviewers were sometimes less appreciative, but The Unknown has become a staple of silent horror movies.

The film will be accompanied live by Mark Latimer at the Wurlitzer Organ, providing a suitably spooky soundtrack.

The screening starts at 11pm and tickets will be available from the cinema box office.
