FOLK multi-instrumentalist and Mercury Music Prize nominee Seth Lakeman will be appearing live in Cumbria this month.

The West Country singer-songwriter has been a festival regular in the county over the past decade, and returns once more to play from his brand-new album.

Playing solo, and with a support act yet to be announced, he'll arrive at the Brewery Arts Centre, in Kendal, on Sunday January 29.

Lakeman’s eighth studio album, Ballads of the Broken Few, was released in September, and showcases his combination of dynamic song writing and playing, and the sublime harmony vocals of emerging young female trio Wildwood Kin.

Continuing his unique vision for recording in inspiring locations – previous albums have been recorded in a church and a copper mine – the eleven tracks were cut in the Great Hall of a Jacobean Manor House and they shine with the atmosphere of that setting.

There is Lakeman’s trademark stomp, his swooping, sighing and aching fiddle and viola, and strident electric tenor guitar.

Since the Mercury Prize nominated Kitty Jay was released in 2004, he has relentlessly pushed his musical boundaries and those of folk and roots music.

On this tour he will play a few select solo shows, performing songs from the new album and other live favourites from his back catalogue.

One of the top names in the UK’s traditional music scene, he has also appeared at the majority of Cumbria's festivals too, including Solfest, Ireby Folk Festival, and the Keswick Mountain Festival.

Tickets for the Kendal date are available from the Brewery Arts Centre box office.
