THE team behind Barrow Underground Music Society head outdoors to host their first summer barbecue event this weekend.

Having hosted a popular stage at Amigos for Another Fine Fest in Ulverston already this year, Graham Newby and Rob Dunphy take the show to Walney for the all-day party at The Crown, in North Scale, this Sunday.

The event follows a similar format to their Amigos parties, with DJs and a handful of bands providing Sonic Zoo's renowned eclectic and alternative musical backdrop.

Sonic Zoo Radio contributors and guests include DJ Gripper - playing a funky mixture of new music - Aim, fresh from releasing acclaimed new hip hop from QNC and Mikey D.O.N. on his Atic Records imprint, Sonic Glue DJs Rob and Gav playing a mixed bag of high quality funk, alternative beats, and rare classics, Ulverston duo Pat Godbert and Spoovoy, aka Natural Selectas, bringing a variety of reggae styles, indie and new wave from Ste Tyson, house-based grooves from Justin Whitehouse, funk and tech from DJ BB, dub and rare disco from Doc Williams, and three live bands.

Jangly and melodic indie trio Paloma Café, who have had recent BBC Radio 6 plays and Manchester festival appearances to their name, The Prophets - renowned for their classic indie vibe with a nod to the early 90s and 60s psych pop - and high-energy, punk-influenced four-piece Resuscitate are all set to appear.

Barrow Underground Music Society (BUMS) founder Gripper says: "I'd known Phil (Northcott, event organiser) from when I hosted gigs in the early 90s and he had been involved with some events at The Crown.

"It turned out that Mike (Elliott), the owner, had also been a regular at a lot of my club nights too.

"As Sonic Zoo, we'd been looking for a venue to hold a small Summer BBQ event following the success of the Amigos Stage at Another Fine Fest and this seemed like an ideal opportunity to give it a go.

"Plus who wouldn't be into doing a summer party on an island?

"If the recent BUMS gigs are anything to go by, the crowd and the vibe will be chilled, friendly and pretty unique. Kids are welcome and any weather concerns will be taken care of by covered areas."

The event runs from noon until 9pm out in the beer garden, and from 7pm there will be DJs in the bar. Entrance is free.
