SAXOPHONE star John Harle returns to Ulverston to headline a live show this April.

The world-renowned performer last visited in 2015, and he is back with a new set, which includes works written for him in his 60th birthday year.

The concert at the Coronation Hall on Friday April 21 will see him team up with his long-time collaborator Steve Lodder, on piano, and there will once again be a guest appearance from homegrown saxophonist Jess Gillam.

Harle will perform a wide-ranging set that takes in well-known songs and self-penned pieces.

Regarded as one of the greatest musicians in the world, he has performed at the BBC Last Night of the Proms, sold more than half a million records and has been nominated for Grammy and Mercury Awards.

He is an Ivor Novello Award winning composer-performer and recent record releases include Art Music and The Tyburn Tree , both with Marc Almond of Soft Cell.

He was artistic director to Sir Paul McCartney for six years and he has also been producer and musical director for Herbie Hancock, Sir John Dankworth, Dame Cleo Laine, Lesley Garrett and Stanley Myers, to name but a few artists.

Harle's performance of the saxophone concerto Panic at the Last Night of the BBC Proms in 1997 was cited by many critics as the most controversial premiere of a new musical work since Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring in 1913. It was the first piece of contemporary music ever to have appeared on that occasion, and divided opinion.

He is the composer of two operas, many concert works and more than 100 film and television scores, including the theme to BBC1's Silent Witness , and the epic score to Simon Schama’s History of Britain .

BBC Young Musician of the Year finalist Jess Gillam, who has been mentored by John Harle, will revel in front of a hometown crowd once again, having appeared with some of the leading saxophonists in the UK on the Coronation Hall stage.

The event on Friday April 21 will start at 7.30pm, and tickets are available from the venue's box office.
