AN adaptation of Booker Prize-nominated novel The Underground Man will arrive at the Brewery Arts Centre, in Kendal, this month.
Following a sell-out run at Nottingham Playhouse, this free-flowing, innovative performance is now on a UK tour, coming to South Cumbria on Thursday February 16.
The Fifth Duke of Portland, is an eccentric Nottinghamshire aristocrat whose imagination and curiosity know no bounds. This deceptively simple man struggles to come to terms with a world that is teeming with new knowledge, ill-founded opinion and gossip.
Why does he hide himself away? What is his fascination with tunnels? Will he ever unearth the secrets hidden in his memory?
In a sequence of events that are often curious and frequently hilarious he reveals moments of surprising perception and wisdom.
The Underground Man is a blend of fact and fiction in which the intriguing details of a complex life are richly explored through the vibrant imagination of a gentle soul.
This new play is a co-production between Nottingham Playhouse, AJTC Theatre and New Theatre Nottingham. The original book was by Mick Jackson and this adaptation has been scripted by Nottingham playwright Nick Wood.
It also has a specially-commissioned score performed live on the night.
The show starts at 7.45pm, and tickets are available from the Brewery Arts Centre box office.
