A NEW Furness arts collective has launched with the aim of bringing arts and community projects to Dalton.

The first major event for Dalton Creatives arrives next month, with The Big Lunch at the Dalton Community Centre, in Nelson Street.

The group of creative thinkers and activists want to bring people together in shared spaces with shared activity, and also work in partnership with other local organisations and agencies.

There are a number of projects in development working around issues including inclusion, wellbeing, arts, culture and food - from pop-up cafes to communal cooking, and from Minecraft to animation.

At The Big Lunch, on Sunday June 18, from noon to 2pm, people can enjoy the food, refreshments and entertainment, but the main idea behind the event is to get people engaged and discussing their own ideas.

Founding member Shaun Blezard says: "Dalton Creatives came into being after a series of chats I had with other creative people living in Dalton.

"We all love Dalton but felt there wasn’t that much happening that we could get involved in, so we decided to start something that could provide that. We will be looking at a whole range of events and projects that the community in Dalton can get involved in.

"We want to see more community conversations happening and to help people be more involved in their community. There is much great work being done around the town and we are looking to help existing projects where we can and to bring our skills and knowledge to those.

"As we develop there will be a number of ways to get involved, either as a volunteer or a participant."

The group are calling for volunteers to come forward to help with The Big Lunch by preparing and serving food, or providing entertainment.

Prior to that, on Friday June 2 the Dalton Creatives will be attending the Dalton Community Association coffee morning at the Drill Hall to discuss the project and invite ideas.
