A NOSTALGIC exhibition featuring board and card games from the 1920s through to the 1970s will open in Barrow next week.

The Dock Museum welcomes back The Games We Played, from Saturday July 8 until Sunday September 3.

The exhibition appeared at the museum in 2015, and returns with more childhood favourites and lesser-known games from the period.

People have been playing board games since the dawn of civilisation - the earliest known complete gaming boards were found in the Royal Tombs of Ur in Iraq and date from about 3000 BC.

The popularity of games grew in the 19th century and mass production methods led to a rapid expansion in the games industry.

From the late 1800s, colourful board games were being produced at a price that many people could afford.

Memories of childhood board games will be stirred by this exhibition, where visitors can see a 1940s Totopoly horse racing game, games based on popular TV shows such as Take Your Pick from the 1950s and Z-Cars from the 1960s, and lots more.

There will also be plenty of games for visitors to play, from the ancient game of Mancala to the ever-popular Snakes and Ladders.

Dock Museum collections and exhibitions manager Sabine Skae says: "This exhibition really is back due to popular demand!

"It’s a really fun exhibition with lots of games to play and I was told that we had to have it again."

The exhibition will be free to view during the Dock Museum's regular opening hours.
