A FAMILIAR name from the Evening Mail's music pages of years gone by will be headlining a fundraising event in Barrow this weekend.

Full Benefit will be making a rare public appearance at Hawcoat Park Sports Club on Saturday night.

One of the Furness scene's busiest bands throughout the 1990s, the five-piece still sell out venues locally at various charity events.

This show is organised by Ulverston Radio-Car Club by way of thanks to the venue for hosting their events in recent years, and is expected to be another packed-out show.

The current line-up is made up of well-known local musicians, with Dean Fawcett on keyboards, Andy Newsham on vocals, Steve Harris on bass, Ian Gibbons on guitar, and Keith Halligan on drums.

Ian says: "This is the first show in a long time that the general public can come along to, but we do quite a few charity events each year.

"Some of the shows we played last year went really, really well, and we still love getting up and playing in front of an audience."

Filled with pop rock classics from throughout the decades, Full Benefit's set usually features material from the likes of Billy Joel and Elton John, as well as more modern bands such as Coldplay and Keane.

"We've probably covered every spectrum of music over the years, when we used to do a lot of weddings and functions, and we can cater for any type of audience really," adds Ian.

"We're all experienced musicians, so we can pick songs up pretty easily,

"We've all been in separate bands over the years where we've recorded our own stuff, and we even wrote a few as Full Benefit, but for the charity shows it is all covers from all kinds of artists."

It will be their first appearance of 2017, and one of only a handful of chances to see them this year - a stark contrast to their mid-90s heyday, which saw them appear at almost every venue in the region.

Ian continues: "When the clubs and pubs were thriving, we were doing three or four shows a week, which was crazy, and it was becoming a proper job for us.

"It got to be a bit of a chore back in the 90s when we were that busy, but now we are only doing the occasional show we can enjoy ourselves a lot more."

Full Benefit play Hawcoat Park Sports Club on Saturday night, from 7pm. Entrance is ticket only, with proceeds going to both the venue and Ulverston Radio-Car Club. To book, phone 01229 831973.
