YOUNGSTERS proved they have what it takes to be the next big thing during the Evening Mail’s Family Fun Day at the weekend.
Budding stars took to the stage in a bid to prove that Barrow’s Got Talent at Barrow Park on Sunday.
The brave contestants were put through their paces by the judges.
Contestants were divided into two categories, juniors, aged five to 10 years old and the senior category, for ages 11 to 15. Overall, more than 20 entrants sang, danced and told jokes to impress the judges, who scored them on the quality of their act and how they entertained the rain-soaked audience.
Some of the highlights of the day included 10-year-old Cameron Lees singing Take That’s Patience and some fancy footwork from dancing duo Kharis McCartney and Bethany Mullen.
The judges had a tough time deciding on a runner-up and winner from each category, as well as a prize for the Most Entertaining.
Judge Molly Lynch said: “It was a really difficult decision to make as the standard was so high. I loved watching all of the acts, singing along and tapping my toes with the youngsters, but then came the hard part picking the winners.
“There were definitely some stars in the making in the competition and it proved that Barrow really does have talent. A lot of it.”
At the end of the show, the winners were announced.
Rebecca Dixon scooped the top prize in the junior category for her beautiful rendition of Castle in the Clouds from the musical Les Miserables.
The runners-up in the junior category were Nicole Barker and Danielle Messenger for Cheetah Sisters by the Cheetah Girls. In the senior category, Gemma Kenrick beat off the stiff competition to claim first prize after wowing the judges with her version of Not a Girl by Britney Spears. She was closely followed by James McMeakin, who sang a soulful version of Stevie Wonder classic Signed, Sealed, Delivered.
The youngsters who took part raised £550 worth of sponsorship money for the NSPCC and Kidsafe UK.
The Evening Mail would like to thank Steele’s Removals for donating the stage and Apollo Cinema and McDonalds Restaurant for providing prizes for our winners.
