South Lakes end Windermere's winning run

SOUTH Lakes put an end to Windermere’s 14-match winning run in a hard-fought showdown in Ulverston.

The North West Division Three North leaders came to Lakes Leisure Ulverston with a record of 14 victories from 14 games behind them – including a 3-1 triumph over their hosts in October.

In contrast, South Lakes went into the match sat fourth-bottom of the table, having lost their last six games.

But, as so often in derby matches, form went out the window in a game between two evenly-matched teams. South Lakes started well, pressing Windermere into making a number of mistakes early in the game.

The hosts were presented with a number of goalscoring opportunities they could not take.

Windermere then finally got some possession and had a couple of chances to score, but South Lakes goalkeeper Mark Huchinson was in fine form.

The deadlock was finally broken when a ball from Steven Heyns found Matt Hartnett in the D who fired the ball on his reverse stick high into the net for his eighth goal in 14 league games this season.

But he was the only man to beat South Lakes keeper Hutchinson on an afternoon when Mere’s usual free-scoring ways were contained by their opponents.

Instead, South Lakes scored from a penalty corner through George Atkinson to take a point.

With Lancaster University winning 7-2 at Carlisle, Windermere’s lead at the top of the table has been cut to four points.

The university side host the league leaders at the start of March is what is a potentially title-deciding encounter, with Mere heading to Southport on Saturday for their next match.

South Lakes, meanwhile, host Mossley Hill, the side directly beneath them in the table, on Saturday.
