HAWCOAT Park will host the second Jeff Simm Rugby Sevens this Saturday.

Hundreds turned out at the same venue last year and organisers are hoping for a similar response.

Simm, who played rugby and coached at Hawcoat Park for many years, was diagnosed with terminal cancer last year.

The event begins at noon, and his daughter Michelle Seal said: “His life and his passion is rugby.

“It is good that he is here to see it again, we didn’t think that would happen. Hopefully it will give him a boost on the day that he needs.

“Every time he kisses my mam, you wonder is that the last kiss?”

The tournament is open to 10 rugby union or league teams, six have signed up but it is hoped more will enter.

Anyone interested can contact Michelle on 07517 386 268 or turn up on the day.

Teams from Hawcoat Park, Furness, Windermere and Barrow Raiders are expected be among the clubs represented as they battle it out for a trophy and £100 of vouchers to be spent over the bar at Hawcoat Park Sports Club.

Entry for spectators is free and family entertainment is set to be provided.

Simm, 67, was honoured at the Cumbria Sports Awards last year when he was presented with the Service to Sport award at Low Wood Bay Hotel, Ambleside.

The former BAE Systems worker became the first Vickers SC player to represent the county in 1976.

Organisers are looking to raise funds for the oncology unit at Furness General Hospital.
