Hawcoat Park A 13 Tyldesley A 12

DAVE Wynne was the hero for Hawcoat Park with two crucial tries as they overcame previously unbeaten Tyldesley to progress to the semi-finals of the Raging Bull Cup.

Wynne scored both of his scores in the first half, and even having to see out most of the second half with just 14 men due to a red card could not stop the Maroon and Whites emerging victorious.

Hawcoat coach Jason Meadows was full of praise for his side after holding on for a 13-12 win, and he is looking forward to a last-four showdown with another unbeaten side.

“What a great performance from the guys,” said Meadows. “To do what they did with only 14 men for most the second half was no mean feat.

“We have drawn another unbeaten team in Manchester side Broughton away in the semi-finals, so fingers crossed we can do the same there and get through to the final.”

Hawcoat's front row of Paul Woodburn, Jordan Garnett and Ryan Brown helped lay the foundations for the home side early on, with the distribution of scrum -half Scott Garnett seeing him and fly-half Euan James link up well.

It was a great passing move which led to Wynne opening the scoring, with Martin Kennedy providing the final ball to send the centre over in the corner.

Pressure from Charlie Butterworth, Harrison O'Brien and Joe Rea then helped force a penalty which James kicked to put Hawcoat eight points up.

Tyldesley were dominating the line-out though, and it was from this they scored an unconverted try on the back of some good work by the pack.

However, the hosts hit back soon after and a break by Grady Slater led to midfield partner Wynne grabbing his second unconverted score of the match, which put Hawcoat 13-5 up at half time.

Hawcoat's hopes were dealt a blow five minutes into the second half when they had a man dismissed for a high tackle, and Tydlesley took advantage to grab a converted try.

That drew the visitors to within a point, but Hawcoat held firm and were unfortunate not to extend their lead when play was pulled back for a forward pass.

But in the end, it did not matter and they now look forward to the match against Broughton for a place in the final.
