Workington 7 Hawcoat Park 7

GLENN Kaighan's converted try proved one of the only highlights for Hawcoat Park as they battled to a 7-7 draw at Workington Zebras in the North Lancashire/Cumbria League.

The wet and windy conditions on the west coast meant it was never going to be a day for free-flowing rugby, and so it proved, with the Maroon and Whites having to play into the wind in the first half.

Despite being bottom of the table, Workington took the fight to Hawcoat and the home side's powerful pack helped them make the most of the wind advantage early on and drive into the opposition 22.

Hawcoat's first-up defence was strong, but although back-row duo Mike Lightfoot and Jonny Burrows put in some big hits, the hosts were able to force their way over under the posts and add the conversion to go seven points up.

Hawcoat began to claw their way back into the match and a strong run from full-back Lewis Sayle helped get them on the front foot.

Midway through the first half, the away side drew level when Jack Shannon recycled the ball for skipper Dan White, who in turn picked out Kaighan on the wing for him to finish well. George Smith added the extras with a strong kick into the wind.

Workington fought back towards the end of the half and had another possible try ruled out after the referee had spotted a knock-on following a clearance kick from Hawcoat being charged down.

Hawcoat were aiming to capitalise on having the wind at their backs in the second half, yet Workington's forwards continued to control the ball and the visitors struggled to put together any meaningful attacking moves, despite some dangerous runs from Jack Sutherland.

It finished all-square, with the final whistle bringing relief for both the players and supporters.
