Oldershaw A 6 Hawcoat Park A 47

HAWCOAT Park ran riot on the Wirral to reach the quarter-finals of the National Cup.

Will Coles bagged a hat-trick and Adam Grainger and Dave Wynne scored two each on a great away day for Andy Murray’s Maroons.

Park got the game under way kicking into the sun and they went on the attack from the off. Great driving work from Paul Woodburn and Ryan Brown took Hawcoat into the opposition 22. And with quick ball through the hands hooker Adam Grainger put wide man Coles in for his first of three tries, which fly-half Euan James converted.

It didn't take long for Oldershaw to start dragging Hawcoat into battle with the home side getting a couple of penalties making the score 7-6.

The first half entered a phase of tug of war until a great run from full-back Lewis Sayle and hard yards by forwards Mark Woodburn and Joe Rea, saw Grainger bag a brace of tries in quick succession pulling the visitors into the clear.

Rory Sayle was dominant in the line out with Matt Robson never far from the action. The running of Dan White was difficult for the spirited home side to handle and with Jay Crowe and Rodni Odandi putting in a shift they were happy when half-time came with the traveling side 19-6 to the good.

The introduction to the pack of Charlie Butterworth, Mark Hall and Josh Vial had an immediate effect as the forwards took control of the game. Scott Garnett was starting to get great ball away to the backs so it was no surprise when skipper Dave Wynne scooted in under the stick in a well-worked try which he converted.

From the kick-off the Woodburn brothers were up and at them taking on all-comers with Butterworth taking the ball to halfway. A sublime kick over the upcoming defence had Coles showing a fine set of heels sprinting in at the corner for a try which James converted.

Despite being on the back foot, Oldershaw were doing their best to break down the Hawcoat defence but it stood strong with White, Rea and Hall all doing their bit for the cause.

Lewis Sayle was at it again breaking the home defence in two when a ball back inside put Wynne in for his second which James again converted.

With the game won there was time for Coles to completer his hat-trick following great work from Crowe back on his inside.

Coach Murray said: "This was a great win today with some brilliant tries scored by a young side, with more training this side will be unstoppable.”
