A NEW season kicks off for Furness tomorrow, while Hawcoat Park seek a first win following an opening-day defeat.

Millom and Ambleside both have home advantage, with Windermere on the road.

Furness v Whitehaven

(Strawberry Grounds, 3pm)

FURNESS get their Cumbria League season under way with a tough home game against Whitehaven.

Corne Els is finishing off his rugby league season, but the return from work of Aaron Pike sees a very strong replacement.

With no recognized stand-off available, the job may fall into the hands of Rhys Studt, with Jordan Ashton looking to hold on to the scrum half position after some great run-outs of late.

Dynamite winger Tez Nueto is hopeful of being available after winning selection for the Thai national rugby league team.

Alex Brown and Iestyn Humphreys will be putting their pace to good use in the backs.

Mr Reliable, Cameron McClure, will be in among everything from the front row with Dillon Tapatu pulling the pack together.

Hawcoat Park v Littleborough

(Hawcoat Park, 3pm)

AFTER losing in the last minute to De La Salle, Hawcoat first team will be looking for better fortunes as they entertain Littleborough.

The team shows some continuity with only a couple of changes. Jason Priss, Adam Grainger and big John Donnan look after things up front, with Ryan Milner and Ash Mowat in the engine room. Johnny Burrows keeps his back-row jersey, with skipper Dan White moving and the returning Callum Ramsey making up the pack.

Antony Munday looks to keep the scrum half shirt and will play alongside the superb Scott Kaighan. Will Coles and Lewis Sayle keep their places out wide, with James Howden moving to the centres to play Chris Burns, who returns from a holiday in Mexico.

Millom v St Benedicts A

(Wilson Park, 3pm)

SKIPPER Ian Cummings leads a strong Millom outfit into battle against the West Cumbrians at Wilson Park.

He will be supported up front by Dean Doyle and Kevin Rogan. The second row sees young guns Keiron Coulson and Joe Thomlinson join forces with the dynamic back row of Martin Jordan, Adam Redhead and Joe Laydon.

Chris Park keeps his hands on the scrum half shirt with Jordan Moyes taking over at fly-half. Jarty Robinson and Stephen Forster are the wide men, with Shane Clarke and Craig Mounsey keeping centrefield under control. With John Falconer bringing up the rear at full-back, the team looks too strong for their adversaries.

It is a big weekend for Millom with the return of the second string, something the club have been working hard to achieve over the last few years. The second team squad is 20-strong which is a massive achievement.

Ambleside v Egremont

(Galava Park, 3pm)

AMBLESIDE open their Cumbria League Two campaign against Egremont A at home – although there may be a late change to Wigton away, which has yet to be confirmed.

Paul Longster takes control as skipper from the second row, with Andrew Clayton partnering the stalwart. In front of them there is the formidable front three of Mike Gibson, Pip Houghton and Paul ‘Herman’ Ayres.

Alfie White will look to control things from loose forward with the backing of wing forwards Greg Machino and Rory Seekings. Link play between forwards and backs will be in the hands of last year’s main man Keenan Longster and fly-half Matt Burrow.

Tomorrow sees Ambleside put out a side made up of local lads and not reliant on students, which is a massive thing for the club going forward.

Egremont v Windermere

THE second-row combination of Tagdh Butler and Josh Dawson could be crucial to Windermere’s fortunes as they face a tough trip to West Cumbria.

They will back up the likes of Shaun Stafford and Dan Harrison, while new boy Simeon Lee will be hopeful of selection at scrum half along with Tom Atkinson and Moses Dawson on the wings.

Brothers Bertie and Rory Hodgson play stand-off and centre respectively and Joe Hallam will be looking to cement his flanker position after returning from injury.
