SUPER Walney Central made it a hat-trick of Top Four final victories after a sensational 20-9 win over newly-crowned Cumbria League champions Distington at Workington’s Recreation Ground.

Tries from the Morrow brothers, Danny and Jamie, plus a touchdowns from Liam Finch and Jordan Staffieri sealed a hard-fought victory.

Both teams tore into each other from the off in this clash but with defences on top it wasn’t until the 20th minute that the first score was registered when Scott George put Distington ahead with a drop goal.

Distington continued their assault on the Cents defensive line and the pressure paid off when they scored an unconverted try after George had tapped through.

Walney battled hard to get back in the game and they pulled a score back when man-of-the-match Liam Finch switched play and Danny Morrow crashed over for a fine try score out wide.

At this stage Walney were on the ascendancy but Distington’s never-say-die attitude saw them plough over once again to go into the break leading 9-4.

The second half started like the first with defences on top. Danny Lockhart, in particular, was very prominent as Cents kept Distington away from the line.

Big drives from Lockhart and McKinley paved the way for a Walney kick through which Distington knocked on and, from the resulting scrum, Jamie Morrow showed great strength and determination to power through the Distington defence for an outstanding individual try.

McKinley kicked the conversion and Cents took a lead they were never to surrender.

For much of the remainder of the half both sides had chances but were unable to penetrate resolute defences.

With just three minutes remaining and Distington pushing for a win, Finch sold a superb dummy to sprint over from 30 yards.

Distington attempted a short kick-off which didn’t go 10 metres resulting in a Walney penalty.

Carl McBain and Danny Morrow drove down the centre of the park and Finch fed the impressive Jordan Staffieri who ran a great line to sprint over for the winning score, Finch converted for the Cents, who had dug deep for a brilliant victory.

A superb Walney team display earned the win but veterans Lockhart and Finch both had top games closely followed by the ever improving Stafferi.

Millom will have put the Champagne on ice following their 26-8 defeat at rivals Featherstone Lions, who now top the National Conference second division on points difference over the Woollybacks.

Tom Sibley’s boys required just the one point against the Lions but failed in their quest although they were in contention at 8-4 down midway through the second half.

Adam Kelly’s two penalty goals kept them in touch before the home side gained the upper-hand, Millom replying with a Lee Postlethwaite try.

The Woollybacks go to Oldham St Annes this Saturday looking to pick up that one point that would see them crowned champions.

On paper it should be a formality as the Oldham side are bottom of the pile having just one win from 17 games.
