THE Marsh Hornets name has been part of Barrow’s sporting scene for more than 100 years and the club are now planning for a long-term future.

The Cavendish Park-based junior rugby league club are holding a reunion at the Navy Club, Barrow Island, on Saturday when former players, coaches and committee members can get together and pool their ideas for rebuilding.

Organiser Rob MacAloone explained: “The idea for a reunion came from a chat I had with Pip Larkin one day, so we got our heads together to contact a few ex-players and coaches to get their views on ways of rebuilding the club.

“We hope some of them can come along to the reunion and maybe take an interest in rejoining the club to perhaps help with coaching.”

Although Hornets’ open-age side folded almost 20 years ago, the club still retains a strong junior section from under-eights up to under-12s and occasionally 14-year-olds.

“Because there are no records, we cannot be sure how old the club is but it is probably more than 100 years old,” added McAloone.

“It has always been my ambition to revive the open-age team, but there is a lot of satisfaction knowing that the boys who started out with Marsh Hornets are still playing for other clubs. I hope some of them can come along and take an interest in helping to build the club up.”

Tickets for Saturday’s gathering which, if successful, may become an annual event, can be obtained from Rob on 07814 766318. They cost £3 each.
