WITH the Barton Townley Cup semi-finals in the rear-view mirror, attention switches back to league action this weekend.

All the area's summer rugby clubs are in action on a busy day.

WALNEY CENTRAL v SEATON

(Central Drive, 2.30pm)

CENTS aim to put Monday's Barton Townley Cup semi-final defeat to Barrow Island behind them when they take on Seaton in the Cumbria League.

Tyler Smith and Mike Darby come back into the Walney squad, with coach Jan Elliott being forced to juggle with his half-back pairing.

Brad Nicholls (ribs) and Jamie Morrow (broken thumb) – who played on Monday – are ruled out, along with Liam Finch (work), while Dave Nicholson is doubtful with a shoulder injury. Connor Pearce and Adam Pearson are unavailable, so it will be a much-changed line-up.

This will give an opportunity for the younger players to show they are worthy of a first-team shirt.

Elliott said “It was a blow losing out on Monday, but it's time to get back to the league. It will be an interesting game, as we have a home win over them in the Cumbria Cup, but we lost badly up at their place in the league.”

ULVERSTON v GLASSON RANGERS

(Dragley Beck, 2.30pm)

ALTHOUGH disappointed with losing to Askam in the Barton Townley Cup last-four, Ulverston coach Phil Atkinson was pleased with the team's performance – one he hopes can be built on for the visit of Glasson.

Atkinson said “I was really proud of the lads and the effort they put in against a Conference side.

“I thought we pushed them all the way, with their extra pace being vital. At times we panicked, but overall we played very well.”

Ryan John, one of the star performers against Askam, is rated 50/50 for tomorrow, having come off with a shoulder injury. Sam Shepherd is also 50/50 with a knee injury and Jamie Sandham could be a long-term absentee with a back problem. Josh Rankin is unavailable.

Glasson come South looking to complete the double, after winning 40-20 on home soil.

MILLOM v OULTON RANGERS

(Devonshire Road, 2.30pm)

DANE Kelly is back to boost the Millom ranks following his wedding two weeks ago, but fellow half-back Jonathan Hodgson is unavailable. Ross Brookes should also return.

Coach Tom Sibley has an arm injury and is unlikely to play.

He said: “Oulton are always a good side, so it will be a tough one, but if we get a good crowd behind us, we could get a result.

“We are playing quite well at home and the lads have really worked hard in training this week.”

HINDPOOL TIGERS v WIGAN ST PATRICK'S A

(Brisbane Park, 2.30pm)

HINDPOOL look to get their season up and running as they seek a second victory to add to their home success against Leigh Miners Rangers more than a month ago.

The Tigers have played just once in the league since then – a 38-22 loss at Halton Farnworth Hornets – though they were edged out 25-16 by Ulverston in the Barton Townley Cup just before that game.

It was a patched-up team that went to Halton, with only 14 players available, most battered and bruised from the midweek cup encounter.

Several men played for the A-team to keep their hand in in their 30-24 win over Roose Pioneers last week – a first Barrow and District victory of the season – and the Tigers are hoping for more regular fixtures to come.

Shifts again hamper selections, so some A-team players might find themselves doubling up, having played Barrow Island tonight.

Ruled out are Jamie Lynn (work) and Jordan Rosconie (unavailable), but Hindpool do have have Jamie McIllroy, Chris Reid, Daryl Archer and Phil Cubiss back – and they could prove the difference directing the forwards around the park.

Free-scoring Nathan Sneesby and Connor McDermott will be hoping to add to their tallies in the backs.

BRADFORD DUDLEY HILL v ASKAM

THE Villagers travel to Yorkshire looking for a repeat of last year's trip, when they won there for the first time in several years.

Coach Mike Wilson feels they will have to strengthen the defence if they are to have the same outcome, and said: “We will really have to tighten up in defence, we are leaking points, while at the same time are scoring some great tries and getting big scores.

“Bradford are a solid side and they are unbeaten at home – it will be tough, so it is important to get our defence right.”

Missing out for Askam are Jake Spedding, Marc Dixon, Dan Sayle and Jake Spedding (unavailable), while Jamie Butler (ribs) and Kris Tyson (hamstring) are doubtful.

Liam Saunders could return following a jaw injury, while Joe Dowsett came through the A-team game last week following a knee problem.

WATERHEAD v BARROW ISLAND

ISLAND will bring back several rested players from Monday's Barton Townley game for the trip to Oldham.

Coach Joe Elliott said: “We will have a strong squad to choose from. We played several young lads against Walney, and they were fantastic. With those sat in the stand ready to come back, it is headache time on selecting the final 17.

“It is important that we pick up the points, but it won't be easy as we push for a play-off place come the end of the season.”
