SUPPORTERS are spoiled for choice this weekend and are sure to be out in force as five of South Cumbria's six clubs are in action on home soil.

Only Millom, who travel to East Leeds, are on the road.

Ulverston have the chance of quick revenge against last week’s conquerors Ellenborough, while Walney and Askam aim to put disappointing performances behind them.

Barrow Island entertain Stanningley, while Hindpool Tigers hope to be back in action against Pilkington Recs in the North West Men’s League.

WALNEY CENTRAL v GLASSON RANGERS

(Central Drive, 2.30pm)

WALNEY are expecting Glasson to provide stiffer opposition than on their last visit a fortnight ago – a Cumbria Cup semi-final in which Cents racked up 62 points.

Coach Jan Elliott is looking for a big improvement on last weekend’s trip to Seaton, which ended in a 26-18 defeat.

“We were poor and three tries in quick succession at the end of the first half left us too much to do,” he explained.

Work commitments rob Cents of James Finch, Dave Nicholson and Jake Devereux, but ex-Barrow Raiders men Liam Finch and Mike Whitehead are expected to be back in the reckoning.

“Most clubs suffer from player availability week by week, but I expect Glasson to be stronger this time,” said Elliott.

ASKAM v SADDLEWORTH RANGERS

(Fallowfield Park, 2.30pm)

PROP Liam Saunders suffered a broken jaw in Askam’s heavy defeat at Oulton and is unlikely to be sidelined for several weeks and Mark Tyson’s ankle injury will keep him out of tomorrow’s game.

“We’d like to wish Liam a speedy recovery,” said coach Mike Wilson whose side have made an unusually slow start to the National Conference Division Two season.

“We were off the pace and we will be looking for an improvement, especially in defence,” added Wilson, whose side have leaked 73 points in their last two games.

Saddleworth suffered their first defeat of the season at the weekend and are likely to give Askam a serious test, but there is no reason to start panicking at Fallowfield Park.

“It is still very early and a lot can happen over the next few weeks. They are going well but this is our chance to show what we can do,” added the Sandrats coach.

BARROW ISLAND v STANNINGLEY

(Rating Lane, 2.30pm)

BARROW Island are still finding their feet in the National Conference league and tomorrow they take on one of Division Three’s promotion favourites, who have already made their mark by running up a 12-try victory against Stanley Rangers a week ago.

“They have been going well and have won three out of their four games, and they rattled up 64 points last week,” said Island coach Joe Elliott.

“There have been plenty of good signs and we know what we have to do. There is room for improvement but we can only try to keep on improving week by week.”

There was plenty of promise in Island's 22-6 win over Clock Face Miners at the weekend and a win tomorrow could nudge them into the top four at this early stage.

Missing through work commitments will be Matt Sayle, but Elliott can call on captain Matt Parkinson and Joe Spencely, with Ryan Clegg and Scott Hadwin facing fitness tests.

“It will be a plus to have our captain back,” said Elliott.

ULVERSTON v ELLENBOROUGH RANGERS

(Dragley Beck, 2.30pm)

PHIL Atkinson had no quarrel with Ulverston’s narrow defeat at Ellenborough – but he is hoping for a taste of quick revenge when the two sides meet again in the Cumbria League tomorrow.

It is only a week since the two sides met in the opening game of the season, and Ulverston went down 23-14. But coach Atkinson is relishing the chance to turn the tables.

“We did okay and played pretty well up there and I am confident that, playing at home, we can reverse the result,” he said.

Atkinson is hoping he can call on much the same side that lost at Ellenborough – with no injuries or work commitments to cause problems – and will add Jamie Sandham, who is available for selection to his squad.

HINDPOOL TIGERS v LEIGH MINERS RANGERS A

(Brisbane Park, 2.30pm)

THE Tigers hope to get their stop-go season in the North West Men’s League truly up and running when Leigh Miners are the visitors to Brisbane Park.

After a series of postponements and cup ties, a full programme is scheduled by the league this weekend.

EAST LEEDS v MILLOM

MILLOM are looking for their third win in a row when they cross the Pennines to face East Leeds.

The sides are level on points in National Conference Division Two mid-table, but Millom must be wary of a backlash – Leeds may still be smarting from their 40-20 defeat at the hands of league leaders Crosfields last weekend.

Danger man for the home side could be Rhys Kilbride, who scored a hat-trick in the defeat in Warrington.
