ULVERSTON will look to build on their near-miss against Barrow and District leaders Barrow Island when they host Roose Pioneers tonight.

The bottom-placed side lost out 24-22 to table-topping Island last week, and will take confidence into their encounter with Roose.

Roose will also be on a high after a valuable 28-20 victory against Dalton at Kelland Park which lifted them to fourth in the standings.

Tonight's other match see Walney entertain Hindpool, and when those two sides meet there is always plenty of good rugby.

Island, with no game this week, went top but were made to fight all the way against Ulverston, with the lead changing hands several times.

It was nip-and-tuck throughout the first half, and Ulverston led 22-18 at the break.

Joe Ward, Che Smith, Keiron Potter and Danny Armistead were the Ulverston try-scorers, while Sam Williams added three goals.

Island's first-half tries were scored by Tez Neuto (2) and Spencer Hoyland, with Callum Dale kicking three goals.

Defences were on top for long periods after the break, and Gaz Shaw was the Island hero when he went over to score. Dale converted.

The first half between Dalton and Roose saw both sides play some open rugby, with Dalton leading 20-16 at half-time. However, they fell away in the second period, unable to put more points on the board.

Harri Brown scored a hat-trick for the hosts, with Joe Crarey grabbing their other try and kicking two goals.

Jordan Aston, Rhys Studt, Dillan Taputu, Danny Waite, and Adam Batty crossed the whitewash for Roose, with Batty adding four goals.

Roose, Walney and Dalton now all have six points.

Tonight's Fixtures (7pm): Hindpool v Walney, Ulverston v Roose Pioneers.
