Askam 32 Millom 16

BEFORE a crowd in the region of 400-plus, Kris Tyson made a welcome return for Askam as they completed the double over local rivals Millom.

Tyson, who has been out for several weeks through injury, kicked six goals including two crucial penalties in the 72 and 74th minutes when the National Conference Division Two match was evenly balanced at 22-16.

This gave them breathing space before Tom Wilkinson rounded off a brilliant Dan Sayle break a minute from time.

Askam didn’t have it all their own way against a determined Millom side in what was a highly entertaining game of rugby at a sun-baked Fallowfield Park.

It was the Woollybacks who were in the driving seat in the early stages giving the ball plenty of air, but it was in the later stages of the second half that Askam edged it.

Dane Kelly, with a strong drive, almost crossed in the second minute but he lost the ball a yard out.

Askam turned defence into attack with good play from Joe Satterthwaite and Tyson, only for the final pass to Tom Butler being adjudged forward.

Millom came back strong through Ethan Kelly and when Noah Robinson stabbed the ball over the home line, Russ Bolton kicked the ball dead.

Millom worked hard from the drop-out and were rewarded when on the last tackle Robinson and Tom Sibley paved the way for Jarty Robinson to go in at the corner and from the touchline, Lee Postlethwaite converted.

Askam then had a spell of pressure, Tom Wilkinson and Liam Saunders both going close before solid defensive work by the Woollybacks forced Tyson to lose the ball a foot short.

On 21 minutes it was level pegging when substitute Dale Lambton came on the burst to crash over for Tyson to convert.

Midge Dixon went close for the visitors along with Brooks, while at the other end a high ball from Kier Shepherd was well taken by Postlethwaite.

Sibley was then taken high in a tackle on 38 minutes allowing Postlethwaite to kick the goal.

The Millom winger then sent the visitors in at the break at 10-6 up with a magnificent 54 yard penalty goal.

The first four minutes of the second half saw the lead in the hands of the Villagers for the first time.

After just two minutes a Satterthwaite kick saw Postlethwaite knock on and from the scrum the ball moved wide for Cairns to fly in at the corner to level matters.

Two minutes further on the clock and a great try for the home side.

Gary Bolton made a tremendous break from inside his own half. He took play deep drawing full back Brooks to send the ball into the arms of the supporting Dan Sayle to touch down, Tyson tagging on the goal for 16-10.

Stung by this, Millom had to score next and they did on 54 minutes. Dixon made a strong run upfield and a kick through saw players scramble for the ball with Millom coming up trumps with Brooks getting the vital touch. Postlethwaite added the extra two points and it was game on at 16-16.

However their joy was short-lived. Shepherd stabbed the ball over the line and Sayle was first to react to score, with Tyson adding the goal.

And it was the diminutive teenager Shepherd who halted the rampant Ethan Kelly with two textbook tackles around the ankles to halt his progress.

Conceding two successive penalties cost Millom dear with Tyson kicking two goals to ease matters at 26-16.

Millom had it all to do but fought on. Hodgson made a fine break and it took four defenders to stop Charlie Elmslie crossing.

However in the final minute Sayle made a telling break from inside his own half to send Wilkinson over for Tyson to convert.
