THEY may think it’s all over – but it’s not quite.

Local rugby players who believe their best days are behind them still have the chance to make it on to the international scene.

Trials for the Bulldogs Over-35s will take place at Wigan St Patrick’s on July 31 and Barrow Island’s John Jefferson would like to hear from any South Cumbrian hopefuls.

The prize – a place on the Bulldogs trip to Dubai for the prestigious international 10-a-side tournament in November.

In the past, the likes of Andy McClure and Steve Perry, of Roose Pioneers, and Paul Dean, Craig McKinnon and Dave Wynne, of Barrow Island, have made the squad.

The Bulldogs representative team have formed a partnership with Prostrate Cancer Charity to raise the profile and much needed funds.

The only qualifying rule for the trials is that players must be over 35 on November 30. Amateurs, ex-pros, even current pros and rugby union players are all eligible.

With BARLA having withdrawn their support because the Bulldogs play matches in Veterans’ Rugby Union tournaments, selection now hinges on performances at the trials in Wigan.

Local players hoping for a tour spot should register their interest by getting in touch with Jefferson by July 24.
