ASKAM will be without skipper Mark Tyson for their big National Conference League promotion push after he suffered a broken arm in training.

Tyson therefore misses tomorrow’s crucial Division Two game with Dewsbury Celtic, adding to the mounting injury list coach Mike Wilson is already juggling.

“It’s a massive blow and the lad is devastated,” said Wilson, adding: “He will be badly missed.”

Local pride is at stake at Rating Lane where in-form Barrow Island – like Askam, chasing the runners-up spot in their own competition – entertain Ulverston in the Cumbria League.

There is plenty of choice for local fans, with Walney at home to Glasson at Central Park and Roose Pioneers hoping for better luck than last weekend when Maryport failed to appear at Redwaters.

Tomorrow’s visitors there are Ellenborough. On the road, Hindpool Tigers travel to Warrington for a clash with Latchford Albion and Millom, fresh from their 56-4 win over Elland, go to Yorkshire to face Shaw Cross.

BARROW ISLAND v ULVERSTON (Rating Lane, 2.30pm)

Joe Spencely and new dad Matt Parkinson will be missing from Barrow Island’s line-up as they step up their bid for a home tie in the Cumbria League play-offs.

After the disappointment of last weekend’s non-appearance of Seaton, Island will be glad to get back on the pitch, but they are well aware that Ulverston will not make life easy for them.

“We can’t afford to be over-confident,” said coach Joe Elliott. “They lost by only a point last week at Walney, who had a strong team out, so we know it is going to be tough.”

Opposite number Phil Atkinson is more than pleased with the form of his forwards and felt that his side had earned a draw in that hard fought game at Central Park.

“We have had a lot of close games this season and our forwards have been outstanding in the last few games,” said Atkinson. “If we can control them in the middle it could be a close game.”

Ulverston will be without Tom Spedding and Liam High because of work commitments, but Jamie Sandham comes into the reckoning.

ROOSE PIONEERS v ELLENBOROUGH (Redwaters, 2.30pm)

Pioneers are looking for a big improvement on the last time these two sides met earlier in the season, when Ellenborough won 48-12.

“It was probably our worst performance of the season,” said Roose coach Steve Neale, “But we will have a better side out this time.

“There are one or two out – Ade White is at a wedding and John Williams is doubtful.”

Mike Bower also misses out because he is taking part in the Great North Run. However, Pioneers’ friendly link with Furness Rugby Union has enabled him to bring in Aaron Pike and Mike Botes.

“They are a big side, but if we can match them physically up front there is nothing in their backs to really worry us,” added Neale.

WALNEY CENTRAL v GLASSON RANGERS (Central Drive 2-30)

Walney, so often the front runners since the formation of the Cumbria Men’s League, may have to settle for third place – and probably a semi-final derby against arch rivals Barrow Island – this time around.

But they will know from their visit up the coast that Rangers are unlikely to be a push-over. Only six points separated the sides when the teams met back in April.

ASKAM v DEWSBURY CELTC (Fallowfield Park, 2.30pm)

The loss of skipper Mark Tyson for their final three games is a big blow to Askam, but they can cement their hold on the runners-up spot by defeating Celtic.

Coach Mike Wilson welcomes back former Barrow Raiders pair Jamie Butler and Barry Pugh, although Tom Butler and Dan Sayle will be missing.

Wilson was full of praise for his side’s first-ever win at Dudley Hill last week – a victory achieved with the help of six players promoted from the successful A team.

“It was a real backs to the wall effort and we showed great spirit,” said Wilson. “It was probably our best win of the season.”

A repeat performance tomorrow should put the pressure on their nearest chasers, Thornhill Trojans and Saddleworth Rangers, who meet in Yorkshire.

SHAW CROSS v MILLOM

Relegation may be a near-certainty for the Woollybacks, but they can go to Dewsbury with fresh heart following their 56-4 win over fellow strugglers Elland last weekend.

Star man Marcus O’Brien chipped in with a hat-trick and coach Tom Sibley – who missed the big win because he was away on holiday – is hoping that his side can finish the season on a high.

“It was a good win and we hope we can build on that and end the season well, starting at Shaw Cross,” said Sibley.

LATCHFORD ALBION v HINDPOOL TIGERS

Tigers ended a long absence from action last weekend with a win over Chorley Panthers and travel to Warrington in an attempt to strengthen their position in Division One of the North West Men’s League.

But they will not find it easy. Although out of the running for the title, Albion are lying third in the table having won eight of their 13 games.
