WALNEY Central cruised into the final of the Cumbria Cup and set up a date with Hensingham in the west of the county following their 62-8 victory over Glasson at Central Drive.

The game was over as a contest after the Cents sweet into an 18-0 lead in the same number of minutes, with a try from Liam Finch in the third minute followed by a Mike Elliott hat-trick.

The visitors deserve a big pat on the back for working hard throughout despite always trailing, with the day getting off to a bad start.

The West Cumbrians requested an early kick-off, which was granted by the home side. However, they were left stranded 75 minutes awaiting their bus which left at 11.15am – having been booked for 10am – and top of that they hit the road works at Lindal.

And, as the saying goes, they were still on the bus as the Cents ran in those first four tries But they never gave up trying to put points on the board and were rewarded with two unconverted tries. Cents were off to a flyer on their first raid Matty Elliott fed Brad Nicholls, who stabbed the ball over the visitors line.

Finch was first to react and get the touch to put them 4-0 up. Five minutes later, Jamie Morrow and Finch linked, and sweeping in at the corner was Elliott for the first of four tries.

It was Morrow again who took on the Glasson defence and his neat ball found Elliott who raced in at the corner to make it 12-0 The same combination took the score to 18-0, with Elliott rounding off in style for brother Matty to convert.

Glasson finally got ball in hand going close through Gary Tierney with the attack breaking down when Josh Jones lost possession. Then on 25 minutes, Jordan Staffieri breezed in for a try in the corner with Elliott landing a touchline goal 24-0. It could have been more points on board as Finch sent Jamie Ralph into space, but play was called back for a forward pass.

On the half hour, Morrow brought Stu Tippett into the line and despite the attention of three defenders he managed to ground the ball, with Elliott tagging on the extra two points.

Glasson broke through three minutes from the interval several players linked before the ball went to ground before coming off a Walney defender allowing Sean Mumberson to get a finger touch to score to make it 30-4 at half-time.

Two minutes into the second half, Nicholls produced a neat short ball to send Morrow over the whitewash with Elliott converting. Glasson then put emphasis on attack with good play with half-backs Tom Dixon and Keenan Winter taking play to the home line, only for full-back Brad Temple sending out a poor pass.

More pressure saw four defenders haul down Byron Burns close to the flag and when a loose pass went to ground, Staffieri picked up and covered 50 yards before being tackled.

However, more points were soon on board when Nicholls was halted short of the line but managed to send out a pass to Tippett to score for the hosts.

Glasson came back with determination, with hard-working hooker Matt Burns held up and finally Tiernery being held a foot short prior to Temple crossing for their second unconverted try after a stab through.

But Nicholls and Morrow then linked for Nicholson to score with ease, while Morrow converted. Nicholson then was provider for Tippett to complete his hat-trick and Nicholls added the goal as Walney moved past the 50-point mark.

Elliott went in for his fourth courtsey of good work from Finch and Morrow, Nicholls tagged on the goal and, to round off the scoring, Nicholls crossed for an unconverted try.

Hopes of an all-South Cumbria final were dashed as Ulverston came out second best to Hensingham at Dragley Beck, losing 26-14, despite a hat-trick from Jonathan Hutton plus a Connor Saunders conversion.

Askam's National Conference League Division Two game at St Judes was off due to waterlogged pitch as was Hindpool Tigers' game at Folley Lane in the North West Men's League.

In NCL Division Three, Barrow Island lost out 20-18 in the final minute at Rylands after leading 14-0 at one stage. They stayed ahead at 18-14 until a late converted try sealed their fate. Man of the match Joe Spencely, Spencer Hoyland (later sent off) and Jake Carter crossed for tries, with Carter adding three goals.
