ASKAM’S National Conference Division Two winning run came to an end with a 36-18 home defeat at the hands of leaders Hunslet.

The game was billed as first-versus-second and the South Leeds side dominated throughout with their massive set of forwards unstoppable at times.

Their pack was bigger and more mobile than any this reporter has seen, with blind-side prop Jamie Fields particularly impressive as he ran in a brace of tries and kicked seven goals.

Askam led 8-6 at the break, but 10 quick points early in the second half saw Parkside gain the upper-hand to run out worthy winners.

All credit goes to the Villagers, who never gave up the chase and worked hard to contain their slicker opponents.

What looked like a piece of history in the making took place on eight minutes with the sin-binning of brothers Joe and Sam Dowsett following a fracus which also saw Parkside’s loose forward Craig Miles joining them. Are they the first set of brothers to be sin-binned at the same time?

A minute’s silence took place as a mark of respect for former Millom player Glyn Robinson, who passed away recently.

Askam kicked off and put on the pressure after a Parkside player failed to take the ball cleanly. From the scrum, Jamie Butler took play to the line, which resulted in Mark Tyson being brought down inches short.

Four minutes later, Joe Dowsett was taken high in the tackle following a strong drive over halfway. From the resulting penalty, Adam Jackson kicked the goal for 2-0.

From the restart, Parkside were first to the ball with Miles setting up a raid only for Mark Stubley to lose the ball with the line in sight Minutes later, scrum half Craig McShane lost the ball over the line.

Then came the sin-binnings and, with Askam down to 11 men, Parkside took advantage as a neat ball from Andy Hulock sent big prop Fields in for a try, to which he tagged on the goal.

Askam counter-attacked, with Tyson going close before being hauled down. From the play the ball, Joe Satterthwaite put in a high kick with no end result.

Parkside came away from their own line with a fine touchline run from winger Jake Corney, but a great double tackle from Tom Wilkinson and Russ Bolton averted what would have been a certain try.

Two minutes from the break, Sam Dowsett was touching down, with Jackson’s conversion giving the home side the lead at 8-6.

Four minutes into the second half the lead was back in the hands of Parkside.

Despite the attention of four defenders, Fields spun around to put the ball down. He also added the goal for 12-8.

On 48 minutes, it was Fields who made a terrific midfield break, parting to Lewis Buxton, who gave a return ball to Fields. He sent Dale Harris in at the corner for a great try. To add icing on the cake, Fields landed a touchline goal.

Askam almost hit back when Sayle snatched the ball off an opponent to stretch over the line, however, he failed to ground the ball correctly.

Hunslet soon added to their tally as full-back Luke O'Mally touched down. Fields converted to make it 24-8 and leave an uphill task for the home side.

The visiting forwards were causing havoc in the Villagers defence, but the home side did go close, only for Ben Lewney to lose the ball 10 yards out.

A brilliant try for Parkside came next as a neat chip over the cover from Hulock saw him gather, taking play deep to send O'Mally in for his second. It was converted by Fields for 30-8.

Askam came to life in attack, well led by Tom Hopkins, who beat several defenders in a fine midfield run to set up a try as Satterthwaite parted to Tyson, who stretched over.

This spurred on the home side, as Hopkins again tore through the cover. Satterthwaite took up the running, parting to winger Tom Askew, who cut back inside to race over. Jackson added the goal to close to 30-18.

Parkside were rattled, but time was on their side and, to round off a good day at the office, Fields attempted a drop goal which rebounded off an Askam player. O'Mally was in like a shot to touchdown for his hat-trick. Fields closed the scoring with the goal.

In Division One, Millom were on the wrong end of an 88-6 result at Normanton Knights to remain rooted at the foot of the table.
