HINDPOOL Tigers A wrestled the CJS Cars Barrow and District KO Cup from holders Askam A over a thrilling 80 minutes at Craven Park.

The Tigers shocked the Villagers by shooting into a 16-0 lead, only to find themselves trailing 18-16 before retaking the lead on 53 minutes on going on to a 38-30 triumph.

Connor McDermott was the star of the show, grabbing a well-earned hat-trick through sheer determination to get over the whitewash.

Askam, who looked dead and buried after going 16 points behind made a good game of it on a cold night at the home of Barrow Raiders.

The Villagers took the game to the Tigers with flowing rugby , but finding a way through proved difficult against a good defence.

On their first raid, Hindpool took the lead when Brandon Edmondson found space out wide to race in from 25 yards.

Tigers should have scored again when they swooped on a loose, but a poor pass to Erik Knibbs saw the ball go to ground.

This spurred on the Brisbane Park side, and following a tap penalty, Cameron Hayton was halted short of the line. The quick-thinking Matty Archer darted in from the play the ball and Grant Burns converted for 10-0.

Askam hardly had ball in hand, but when they did they went further behind as Rory Marshall’s intended pass was intercepted by Edmondson, who sprinted in from 35 yards. Burns tagged on the goal.

A neat break from Lee Boyd saw him head for the line, but fine covering by Luke Duncalf and Josh Steel hauled him down.

On 32 minutes, the comeback was on when Marshall made amends to go in by the posts. Brad Jackson converted.

The Tigers were then penalised for ripping the ball out in the tackle, resulting in Dale Lampton forcing his way over. Jackson converted again for 16-12.

The Villagers went ahead after Edmondson intercepted only to knock on. From the scrum, the ball was in the hands of Cooper, who ran across the face of the defence to touchdown in the other corner. The touchline kick from Jackson sailed between the posts.

On 53 minutes, the Tigers were back in the driving seat as Archer fed McDermott, who pulled out of the tackle to go in at the corner. Burns converted.

On the hour-mark, Jamie McIllroy parted to Heighton, and he sent McDermott racing over the whitewash. Burns tagged on the goal for a 28-18 lead.

The Villagers hit back with swift play across field sending Lampton in for the try. Jackson goaled.

But their joy was short-lived as within two minutes Dale Sneesby put McIllroy in for the four-pointer, turned into six with the boot of Burns. It was 34-24.

McDermott stormed in to complete his hat-trick, prior to Marshall crossing in the final minute.

McIllroy received the trophy from CJS sponsor Jimmy Salisbury.
