WOMEN'S rugby league will finally return to Furness this weekend, as Barrow Ladies prepare for action.

Barrow take on Huddersfield at Rating Lane four months after making their playing bow with a 24-20 win at Langworthy Reds, Salford.

The newly-formed side have played several fixtures away from South Cumbria, but have also seen games at Rating Lane cancelled as a result of visiting teams pulling out.

But Huddersfield are set to break that home duck tomorrow (2pm kick-off), two weeks after Barrow made the trip to West Yorkshire in their opening Women's League fixture, being edged out 26-16.

Barrow, coached by John Johnson and Phil Stirzaker – whose daughter Emily is among the team – were due to travel to Thornhill last weekend, but that fixture has now been rearranged.

The women’s game locally blossomed in the 1990s when several outstanding players were produced, with many going on to win Great Britain international honours. After a barren period, it is back, with Barrow Ladies being formed last winter and now aiming to make their mark in the 13-a-side game. Already they have had players scouted out by the Lancashire set-up, with Katie Gower impressing when playing for the county under-19s when they defeated Yorkshire.

Barrow are still looking for more players to join their ranks, with training taking place at Ostley Bank every Tuesday at 6pm. The club also have plans to introduce under-14s and under-16s sections in the future.
