ASKAM and Millom both seek home wins after making contrasting starts to the National Conference season.

While Askam sit top of the fledgling Division Two table, Millom are at the wrong end of the third division and hoping for their first league win.

Elsewhere, Walney aim to continue their strong beginning to the North West Men’s League campaign at home Widnes Tigers.

ASKAM v DEWSBURY MOOR

(Fallowfield Park, 2.30pm)

TOP of the tree in Division Two of the Conference, the Villagers bid for a third straight win as they take on Dewsbury Moor.

Joe Satterthwaite is still sidelined with a shoulder injury and Jack Cairns is hoping to shrug off an injury.

Back in contention after missing last week’s game at Hunslet Warriors are Jamie Butler, Mike Wilson and Marc Dixon.

Coach Dave Clark is happy with the 100 per cent start to the season. He said: “It is nice to get a couple of wins under our belts, and having a big and strong squad enabled us to get through these games.

“We had to make several changes last week, but competition for places is good and the lads that have come in have done a great job.

“It will be difficult to name the 17 as the lads who came in last week will have to come into contention. They took their opportunity and that is good to keep players on their toes.”

MILLOM v EASTMOOR

(Devonshire Road, 2.30pm)

ROSS Brookes faces a late fitness test as the Woollybacks prepare for their first home fixture of the campaign.

Brookes pulled up in the pre-match warm-up of last week’s game at Salford City Roosters and is rated as 50/50.

Into the squad come Tom Newbiggin, Bobby Wright, Chris Warren and Luke Brady as they look to kickstart their season.

Millom’s first taste of National Conference Division Three life has not got off to the best of starts with two narrow defeats – both by two points.

Player/coach Tom Sibley is not overly concerned however. He said: “We are not too far away. We have gone close in the first two games and are not over-worried, it is a long season.

“When we get that first win – hopefully tomorrow – then we can kick on.

“We won’t be worrying about Eastmoor. We will get on with our own game, but we will just have to work that little bit harder.

“Last week, we lost it in the last minute 20-18 with a touchline conversion to a try. We will work hard tomorrow and for the rest of the season. There are no easy games in the Conference.”

Millom have had a good pre-season at home, defeating Ulverston in the first round of the Barton Townley Cup, plus scoring Challenge Cup victories over Scottish side Strathmore Silverbacks and Dudley Hill.

Sibley anticipates a good crowd, and is looking for supporters to give them a lift in their quest for that first win of the campaign.

WALNEY CENTAL v WIDNES TIGERS

(Central Drive, 2.30pm)

THE Tigers pay their first visit to Central Drive as Cents look for a hat-trick of straight wins to start their campaign in North West Men’s League Division One.

Ethan Furness is still out injured, while Jonathan Corkill and Jamie Ralph are unavailable.

Joint-coach Dave Bell said: “We have a strong squad and places each week are up for grabs.

“We made eight changes last week to the previous game and those that came in fitted in nicely. We have big numbers at training and all want to play, so it makes those who have the shirt work harder. We were looking to have a run-out on the pitch last night as most of our preparation has been done elsewhere.”

ULVERSTON v ST CUTHBERTS

(Dragley Beck, 2.30pm)

JORDAN Moyes has left Dragley Beck and returned home to Millom, while also out of the running are Josh Rankin, Brad Wilkinson and Tadge Butler.

On the flip side, Ryan John, Dan Crabtree and Kieron Potter come into the squad.

Coach Phil Atkinson is looking for his first win, and said ahead of the game: “I was disappointed with last week’s defeat at Leigh East, but in fairness they had a few first-team players in the team.

“We have worked hard on our attack in training this week. It could have been better at Leigh.

“It won’t be easy. St Judes had two good wins in the BARLA Cup, both up the coast at Ellenborough and Glasson. It is important that we start to get some wins under our belts.”

WATERHEAD v BARROW ISLAND

RYAN Clegg has put his hands up for the trip to Oldham despite popping his shoulder.

Back in contention after a four-year absence is former BARLA international three-quarter Ben Garner, who has had several major injuries.

Also back is Callum Nelso,n while Jack Sutherland and Jake Carter are still on the treatment table, and work rules out Matt Parkinson and Matty Sayle.

Coach Joe Elliott said: “It is our goal to get up into the top half of the table, and though we have lads missing we have a sound squad and are looking to pick up both points.”

PILKINGTON RECS A v HINDPOOL TIGERS

JAMIE Lynne, Grant Burns and Connor McDermott miss the trip to St Helens as the Tigers play their first game of the season.

Coach Phil Cubiss said: “Hopefully, we will get some game time. For one reason or another we have had three games called off. The lads are itching to play.”
