ASKAM are just one win away from promotion to National Conference League Division One after overcoming Leigh East in their play-off semi-final on Saturday.

The visitors made the perfect start to the encounter at Fallowfield Park, with East full-back Chris Penn going over for a try after just five minutes and Adam Holland adding the extras.

The Villagers responded quickly though and were back on level terms when winger Tom Askew crossed in the corner and Sam Dowsett converted from close to the touchline.

Leigh retook the lead midway through the half thanks to a try from William Bishop and a second conversion from scrum-half Holland.

But just before half time, Askam loose forward and home man of the match Tom Wilkinson took a short pass and dived in under the posts, with Dowsett again converting to make it all square at the break.

The home side started to take control of the match in the second half and went ahead for the first time on 47 minutes when a sweeping move was finished by full-back Russ Bolton out wide and the try again converted by Dowsett.

Tom Butler then went over for another converted score just three minutes later, with Leigh struggling to find a way through some determined defence.

Tom Goffatt put the seal on the win five minutes from time and Dowsett kept up his perfect record with the boot by converting, setting up a home final against Blackbrook on Saturday, October 15.
