THERE is a full programme of amateur rugby league in the area tomorrow following a break for the Bank Holiday weekend.

Askam and Barrow Island are both at home in National Conference League action, against Drighlington and Stanningley respectively, while Millom make the trip to take on Thornhill.

The day’s Cumbria League action sees Ulverston head up to the west coach to face Wath Brow A and Hindpool Tigers return to North West Men’s League action for the first time in three weeks when they travel to Halton Simms Cross.

ASKAM v DRIGHLINGTON

(Fallowfield Park, 2.30pm)

BROTHERS Mark and Kristian Tyson are ruled out through injury along with Darren Gaskell and Jamie Butler, but hopefully returning will be Dan Sayle.

Otherwise it will be a similar squad which won at Millom two weeks ago.

Drighlington are newcomers to South Cumbria, having been promoted to NCL Division Two for this season, though they are not having the best of fortunes.

Coach Mike Wilson is not taking them lightly though, and the former Villagers half back said: “We will not be thinking of an easy two points, we will have to be on our game as they are an unknown quantity.

“It was nice to get the win at Millom in our last game out it was a close first half but we got on top in the second half and played some good rugby.

“But we have to be more consistent. We have lost two home games already this season and that has got to stop if we are to make progress in the league table, we can’t afford any more home defeats.

“Having last weekend off enabled some of the lads to get over niggling injuries so we should be fresh.”

BARROW ISLAND v STANNINGLEY

(Rating Lane, 2.30pm)

ISLAND welcome Blain Marwood, Matt Parkinson, Ian Irvine and Matty Sayle back into contention for places in the final 17 as the Rating Lane side aim to go one better than their last outing in NCL Division Three when they drew 22-22 at Dewsbury Celtic.

“We did well to get a point at Dewsbury with no less than 17 squad members unavailable that day,” said coach Joe Elliott. “They are in the squad and I have competition for places tomorrow.

“I am looking for more or less a settled side in the coming weeks. It has been difficult in recent games with permutations, but once we are settled we can take off.

“There are no easy games in this division home or away, it is how you perform on the day so we are anticipating another tough contest.”

WATH BROW A v ULVERSTON

THE Dragley Beck side travel up the coast to face a difficult task against the Brow’s second string – a team which has come good this season.

Ulverston coach Phil Atkinson said: “For different reasons, we have had no game time since May 6th so we may be a bit rusty.

“I will be finalising the 17 today with several players 50-50.

“I am aware it won’t be an easy game as the Brow have had some good results, so we will have to be well-prepared.”

Sam Shepherd could return, but missing out are Mike Reekes, Jamie Sandham (both injured) and Liam High (work).

THORNHILL v MILLOM

THE Woollybacks, smarting from their home defeat by Askam two weeks ago, look to get back on track but face a tough task heading deep into Yorkshire.

Chris Warren returns while teenager Noah Robinson is rated 50-50 as the talented youngster has a shin problem.

“It’s another tough game and hopefully the week off will have given a few bodies time to recover from the Askam game,” said coach Tom Sibley ahead of the trip.

“I thought we played quite well despite the scoreline. We were in it for the first half hour, but we need to be in it for the full 80. I can’t praise the young lads highly enough when they come in when called upon, so as long as we compete I will be happy.”

HALTON SIMMS CROSS v HINDPOOL TIGERS

PHIL Cubiss is leaving it until the 11th hour before he names his final 17 for the trip to Widnes, with minor knocks and lads possibly having to work delaying his selection.

“It should be an even game. Both teams have won three and lost two, but what I want is games each week,” said Cubiss.

“It has been stop-start so it has been hard to get consistency, but once things settle down I think we can string a few wins together.

“There is no lack of effort from the lads so we can start to pick up the points in the coming weeks.”
