ASKAM are aiming to silence Salford City Roosters when the sides clash in the National Conference League Division Two at Fallowfield Park, while Conference Division One side Millom head to Yorkshire to face Underbank.

In the Cumbria League Walney Central will aim to bounce back against visiting Wath Brow A following defeat at Barrow Island, while the Rating Lane outfit head to Ellenbrough.

Both Ulverston and Roose Pioneers head up the coast where they face tough games against Distington and Hensingham respectively.

Askam v Salford City Roosters

(Fallowfield Park 2.30pm)

ASKAM look to get their National Conference League Division Two promotion place back on track after defeat to Saddleworth last weekend, the Oldham side leapfrogging them into third place.

Tom Hopkins and Barry Pugh return while several players are 50-50 including the Butler boys, Jamie and Tom, along with Russ Bolton.

Half-back Mark Tyson is slowly recovering from a leg injury and has had the cast removed but it is unknown when he will be back in the fold. However brother Kris, who has also been sidelined for several weeks, had his first run-out at Saddleworth.

Coach Mike Wilson will not play lads that are not 100 per cent and he said: “Some lads are struggling so if they are not quite ready then I won’t risk them, we have too many important games coming up.

“We were lacking players last week at Saddleworth and though we were 18-0 up we couldn’t hold out and they snatched it 22-18. Though disappointed it was a good effort and with a little more composure we could have won it.”

The Villagers are looking to reverse the away scoreline of 7-4 to the Roosters in a game played in torrential rain.

Walney Central v Wath Brow A

(Central Drive 2.30pm)

THE Cents aim to bounce back from last week’s 18-10 defeat at the hands of Barrow Island when they take on the Brow’s second string.

Walney lie third in the Cumbria League table on 14 points with the Brow on equal points in fourth so it should be a close encounter.

The Brow were 18-14 winners in completing the double over Roose Pioneers last Saturday at Redwaters.

Cents coach Shaun Morrow is aware of the Brow threat and said: “The Brow are a good outfit, they are a young side that stuck together over the last three years and are playing good rugby.

“We used to beat them by big scores, but they were only kids but they have come good and we will not under-estimate them.

“We need to pick up the points being two adrift of Barrow Island (Cents two games in hand) and have to play Distington twice, so we have some tough games coming up.”

Morrow is without Brad Nicholls, Dave Warne, Danny McBain and Liam Finch, all through work, while out injured are Ethan Furness and Jamie Ralph.

Back to partner Matt Elliott at half-back is Jamie Morrow with Jordan Staffieri also returning. After a couple of impressive displays of late, Steve Bell is included in the 17.

Distington v Ulverston

AFTER a three-week lay off Ulverston returned to action last week but lost out to Maryport and they face a tough encounter up the coast at undefeated Cumbria League leaders Distington tomorrow.

Ulverston coach Phil Atkinson said: “We were a little rusty last week and disappointed with the result. We know we have a game on our hands at Distington but they are only one game away from a defeat so let’s hope we can pull it off. You never know, these things do happen.”

Tom Spedding, Mike Reekes, Matt Miller and Joe Hambley are unavailable as Atkinson tries to finalise his 17-man squad.

Hensingham v Roose Pioneers

PIONEERS can leapfrog their Cumbria League hosts and move off the bottom of the ladder if they pick up the points. But they go into battle minus Ade White, Russ Birch, Mark Bown and Kieron Mason. Back in the fold though are Dan Sharp and Josh Wilcock and possibly Joe Mallinson.

Pioneers coach Steve Neale said: “We are in with a shout, they are down there with us so we have a fair chance of winning. We could have won against Wath Brow but were not clinical enough, we created but finished badly.”

Ellenborough v Barrow Island

RICHARD Chatfield, Matt Parkinson and Jake Carter are unavailable with Aiden Wright and Dec Rogers set to come into the squad.

Island coach Joe Elliott said: “I was very pleased with the win over Walney, I thought we were always the better team and bossed them. But tomorrow we will have to be on our guard, even though we won the home fixture.”

Underbank v Millom

KEY players Marcus O’Brien, Adam Kelly and Lee Postlethwaite all miss the National Conference Division One trip into Yorkshire, a game the Woollybacks must win if they are to catch third-bottom Shaw Cross, who are six points clear.

Coach Tom Sibley said; “Another tough one on the road with many experienced players missing but we will give it our best shot. We went to their place last year with a weakened side and won, so you never know.”
