ASKAM romped to victory over Salford City Roosters at Fallowfield Park to keep their promotion hopes alive in National Conference Division Two.

Bradley White gave the Roosters a 2-0 lead in the third minute, but it was the home side who took control to run in 40 points without reply.

The visitors arrived late, delaying the kick-off by 15 minutes and were still on the bus as the Villagers rattled up 18 points by the 13th minute. From this point, the game was in the bag and over as a contest.

Askam slowed down a little, but there was never any threat they were going to lose this one, gaining revenge for a 7-4 defeat in the away fixture.

A high tackle allowed White to kick that third-minute goal, but the home side were to respond within three minutes.

Sam Dowsett made a forceful run into the Roosters territory, sending Gareth Richards to within a foot of the line, where he was hauled down.

From the play the ball, the alert Dowsett scampered in by the posts for Dan Sayle to convert and make it 6-2.

Three minutes later there was a smart try for the home side as Tom Hopkins drove hard in midfield. Tom Wilkinson, Alex Brailsford and Sam Dowsett continued the attack for Joe Satterthwaite to throw out a long pass into the arms of Tom Butler, who touched down. Sayle tagged on the goal.

On 13 minutes, Russ Bolton bagged a fine try as he supported a neat Sam Dowsett break in midfield, with Sayle converting for 18-2.

Another raid fell down when centre Andrew Muscat intercepted to race 45 yards before he was tackled.

It was all Askam at this stage as Pugh sent Sam Dowsett racing to the line before he was brought down by full-back Chris Higgins.

Salford had a rare attack, only for prop Marc Jones to knock on.

On the half-hour it was 24-2 when Pugh was the provider for Joe Dowsett to touchdown, Sayle once more obliging with the goal.

Salford went close through scrum half Steve Barry and, when Muscat looked like crossing the line, he was stopped in his path by four defenders. Another threat came from the boot of Barry, but Russ Bolton was on hand to boot the ball dead.

The second half was barely under way when Alex Edwards made a telling break for the Roosters, but a try-saving tackle came from the alert Wilkinson and Russ Bolton.

On 44 minutes, there was no stopping Rob Cockayne, who from three yards out was under the posts without a hand laid on him. Sayle added the goal.

The Roosters were finding it difficult to breach a strong home defence and when White chipped over the cover, Adam Jackson kicked the ball dead.

Tom Hopkins, who was having a sound game, made a tremendous burst up-field, from where Sam Dowsett was tackled 10 yards out.

Then, from a close-in scrum, Sayle was the provider as he sent Ben Lewney in at the corner, but failed to convert this time.

However, it was Sayle who had the final say when he broke free to touchdown and convert, taking the final score to 40-2. There was no joy for Millom in Division One, as they failed to score at Underbank Rangers, losing 62-0.

In the Cumbria League, Roose Pioneers were denied at the death when they lost out 32-30 at Hensingham.

Joel Williams brought the scores level at 30-30 with a converted try, but a penalty goal in the final seconds gave the home side the points.

Adam Batty crossed for a hat-trick of tries, with two coming from Glen Phillips and Steve Perry adding three goals.

Ulverston failed to score at unbeaten leaders Distington, going down 58-0, while Seaton were 21-20 winners at Glasson Rangers. Walney Central coasted to a 72-6 victory over an under-strength Wath Brow A team at Central Drive.

Jordan Staffieri led the romp with his first senior hat-trick of tries, while others came via Declan Gavin (2), Mike Backhouse (2), Jack Rushton (2), Jamie Morrow, Steve Bell, Dave Nicholson and Connor Pearce, who added 10 goals.

Joe Spencely and Sam Jones crossed for tries, with Matt Sayle adding two conversions and a late penalty goal to seal a 14-12 win at Ellenborough for Barrow Island, who remain in second place.

On Wednesday at Dragley Beck, Ulverston take on Walney Central (7pm kick-off).
