ASKAM will be pretty in pink this month as the village's rugby league team take part in a charity ladies day.

The club, who are normally kitted out in green, will don a special bright pink strip for their National Conference Division Two match against Stanningley on August 20.

The game is part of a day of entertainment which will see stalls, a bouncy castle and face-painting, among other activities, during the day, and an evening of entertainment featuring singer and comedian Danny Tetley.

Money will be raised across the day for St Mary's Hospice and the oncology unit at Furness General Hospital.

Askam vice-chairman Ray Alexander said: “Before the start of the season, we were looking organise a charity night, but some of the players suggested a ladies day.

“We have a special pink strip commissioned, kindly sponsored by local businesses, who were only too keen to jump on board and share the opportunity to be part of a memorable day.

“The new strip will be used this year and again next season before being auctioned off to raise more money for our two chosen local charities, Furness General Hospital Oncology Unit and St Mary's Hospice.

“It will be a fun day and everybody is asked to wear pink, to show their support.”

The special strip has been sponsored by BVS, LPS, RF Miller Accountants, Harry Barker Properties, Coco Hair and Beauty, Mr T’s Garage, Cool Runnings and JD Joinery.

A bouncy castle, donkey rides, trampoline, sweet and cake stalls, bottle tombola, grand raffle and barbeque are among the activities available throughout the day.

Tetley, of Pop Idol fame and more recently from the TV series Benidorm, will lead the evening's entertainment.

Alexander, who along with wife Jane, the club secretary, has taken on the job of organising and promoting the day, added: “We have started our fundraising by selling Askam Rugby Fights Cancer pink wristbands.

“The theme is carried throughout the day, with special pink rugby balls purchased from America especially for the game. These have been kindly sponsored by a local businessman and will be auctioned off at night.”

The club have number of items to auction and a grand raffle will take place on the day.
